How many times have wrestling teams had to re-arrange their practice schedule in order to prepare for up-coming events? SAVE THE GAMES

WWSPORT_COM | Profile
January 21, 2009

One of my first memories of being involved in the sport of wrestling was qualifying for my first Empire State Games. It was a great experience, as I gained many friendships and learned a lot about wrestling techniques. I continued to qualify for the Empire State Games through high school, into college, and even post college. The Games are an experience that all athletes, young or old, should be able to experience. It’s ridiculous to think that after 30 years of history, the state is going to allow this great tradition to elapse. The Empire State Games has created opportunities… more »

How to Build a Chgampionship Program

WWSPORT_COM | Profile
October 17, 2008

So often we see wrestling programs being directed by great wrestlers who have little or no coaching experience. Some adapt quickly and turn struggling programs around. Some take years to adjust to find success. As you know, running a program isn’t just about teaching double-legs and half-nelsons. There is a plethora of responsibilities that are integral parts of the building blocks of a championship program. The fact is, there has never been a tool available to coaches that breaks down and assists the necessary steps to take in developing a top-level program. Two-time National Coach of the Year, Dave Mills… more »

WHY GRECO?

WWSPORT_COM | Profile
September 17, 2008

I read a great article the other day by Isaac Ramaswamy, a coach at Sachem High School and one of the masterminds of New York’s Freestyle and Greco-Roman teams. I’ve known Isaac for a long time and hold tremendous respect for him and his abilities as an athlete and coach. His article “Greco-Roman Skills in Folkstyle Wrestling” is a sidebar in USA Wrestling’s Coach’s Guide to Excellence. I guess I was intrigued by his article because I am a believer in Greco-Roman helping wrestlers improve Folkstyle success. I learned a switch in 8th grade in my living room. I didn’t… more »

COMBAT WRESTLING'S ULTIMATE OPPONENT!

WWSPORT_COM | Profile
September 4, 2008

As I look back at my freshman year in college I can now appreciate what was an eye opening experience. I was able to solidify a starting spot over a senior, won over 20 matches, placed in every tournament our team competed in, and secured a win against my opponent from Cornell to help lead our to team to a victory. Unfortunately, during that match, one of my teammates became infected with a major skin disease. Even more unfortunate, I caught that skin disease a week later. I was out of the line-up and off the mat for three weeks.… more »

Creative Practice Idea

WWSPORT_COM | Profile
September 2, 2008

A few years ago I read an intriguing article in W.I.N Magazine by Olympic Gold Medalist, Steve Fraser. Coach Fraser wrote about a type of practice that was used when he competed at the University of Michigan and utilizes now as the Greco-Roman National Team Coach. The practice is called a “grind match”. After reading about “grind matches”, I quickly implemented the idea into our practices. For me, the grind match wasn’t just about improving the condition of my student-athletes; it offered much more for the program that we were trying to develop. The grind match is just what it… more »

BREAKTHROUGH NUTRITION FOR BUSY ATHLETES

WWSPORT_COM | Profile
August 26, 2008

We, as wrestlers, are always trying to find the perfect pre/post match food. When I was a younger athlete in high school, I remember concocting different formulas to drink after weigh-ins to give me extra “energy”. One of my favorites was grape juice and honey. I was sure that this was my perfect “fuel” for pre-match. The bad thing about my “ideal” concoction was that it left me with a sugar low! I never thought about the perfect foods nature offered that sustained energy over several hours because of the different types of carbohydrates they offered. Fast forward twenty years… more »

Olympic Wrestlers Give USA Promising Future

WWSPORT_COM | Profile
August 22, 2008

Ok, so it wasn't the best performance we have seen from the US wrestlers. However, if you look at the BIG PICTURE, I think that you will see an exciting progression of success in the years to come. First, we have youth on our side. If you look at the 17 Olympians representing the US, only two were returning team members (Vering & Cormier) and if you factor in retirement (maybe we lose three team members) we have a great team returning, especially with the depth of the national team to replace those retirements. How many other countries could say… more »
