Fun at last.
August 16, 2008
I get back from the workout and what do I see. Cartan tours is selling a ticket. I haven't been to an event yet. And what is this one. BEACH VOLLYBALL. While I was in the storm on the great wall I met a guy that had some video blog thing going on for MTV or something. He said beachvollyball was the most fun. Heck yeah it was. All our professional sports, that's what this beach vollyball game was like. It is fun lots and the guy doesn't think I'll make it so I buy it for face value. Face value is 50 Yaun which is not bad, $7.50 and I have a chance of catching the vollyball which each team throws out (Brazil kicked it and it came close but I missed.) I but the ticket, jump on the subway and get there with a taxi. 13 Yaun together. 2 USD, I feel robbed. That is $9.50 and then you add one the beers I got 6 times 5 Yaun. almost 5 bucks. 14 USD for beach vollyball. 7 PM to 11 PM. But it is worth it because of the contacts I make. First I meet a little five year old girl named Maeingileelee. She can count to 14 IN ENGLISH. And probably futher but I interrupt her. She says 'Hello' to me probably like 5 times and asks me my name, where I'm from, ect. And her mom doesn't speak english at all. She takes a picture with me then says bye bye. Then I meet a guy named Zhangyushaung and he talks to me in broken english. He tells me please is actually 'Chiung' but the ch sounds like a t and the ng and really silent. Also it has that chinese dropping and rising sound. He is a teacher and tells me his salary is 300 a month. He has brought his whole class to watch the game and they are a big crowd in the stands. I tell him about america a little and prices and try to explain opportunity costs (at the same time I met a guy that worked for Disney who said real estate prices are roughly the same). Zhang seems very interested about testing his english with me and learning my english, so for a while I just talk and talk, trying to avoid changing subjects to fast for him so he can learn quickly. I am very sincerly of the school that all things can be accomplished in split seconds if persued correctly. The best way to learn is a pattern of overloading and building blocks, another way of saying it is in overloading every sense and linking it to previous knowledge. We exchange e-mails and numbers and after the game is over we part.....
This is where I met Taylor, and it almost catches me up completely. I catch a taxi and it takes me to one of the bar streets. I go into a kariokee bar thinking jeez, I'm all alone. I need to meet some people otherwise I'm going to be bored. So I sit down and not a second later I hear someone scream out 'good stuff' (but a different word). I laugh and say heck yeah and then jump over and introduce myself. Taylor lives in Glenview, which if you don't know is right around where batman lives and around the corner from evanston. He goes to ASU now and plays club soccer so needless to say he is cool. He tells me he's been living here for 3 months and he teaches english. He makes 2 K a month USD and lives with a family for free. His chinese father ('baba' / mother 'mama') is buying drinks tonight. great deal. He speaks nearly fluent chinese and laughs at me for some of the deals I made. He says whatever they offer, offer one tenth, they take advantage of foreigners. I tell him about the suits and how I already put 1500 yuan down to get it. He says call him tomorrow he'll help. If worse comes to worse I owe 1750, the suits are already made to my size and they won't be able to get rid of them easily. I can afford to cut my loses and blow 220 USD. I could probably find a better deal for the reamaining 250 USD I have. Brian says 'a deals a deal', but I know how social psych works. People try to force you to make a commitment and then because you made it you still have to go through it, even reluctantly. If I default on this one in all way shapes and forms I save more than if I stick with it. I should be able to get my suits for 200 to 600 Yaun now.
