Bowling Overtakes Wrestling For 783rd Most Covered Sport!

Martin Floreani | Profile
November 17, 2007

Last night i was in Dirty Jersey. I have a love hate relationship with Dirty Jersey. I love the wrestling and the energy that state has for wrestling but I dont like the dirty part so much:) But its the people like Damion Logan, Ernie Monaco and their wrestlers that are the most important part though. I was staying with Damion Logan from Premier and he is a funny and cool dude.

Anyways we decided to kick back, get a pizza and watch some movies, we ended up only watching TV though. I dont get much time to watch TV. I can say I havent watched tv...like sit down and watch something...for a while. So I was mesmerized and observing everything when I noticed that ESPN is covering Bowling!!! They had some pretty funny commercials for it too! I almost wanted to plan my schedule around the next premier bowling tournament....almost.

I dont want to beat a dead horse, but what the hell I will. I was hoping we could make a list in these comments of everything that gets more exposure and coverage than wrestling. How do the people at the top of this sport to get beat out by bowling? Is someone going to tell me how much more bowling is apt for TV than wrestling? I could just hear the logic now. If they dont think that marketing wrestling and promoting it are important just ask guys like Rob Koll, Brian Smith and J Robinson.

I bring this up now because the organization of USA Wrestling prevented me from shooting the Russian vs Americans Dual out of what feels and seems like pure resentment. Sure they dont say that but their logic points to it. I fly all the way in to the NYACs delight to cover the dual and I want to promote wrestling. I get told moments before the event by USA Wrestling that either I put my camera away or they will have security escort me. All for what? Did USA Wrestling have the event up on LSV or some other site.

What USA Wrestling should realize that they shouldnt try and be their own media company and shouldnt team up with media companies like Live Sports Video or Wasserman Media who give a rats ass about wrestling. Have you ever been on LSV? Besides giving you a seizure, if you are on it for more than 10 seconds your going to want to jump out your window. I can just see some dude jump out their window while having a seizure...now thats messed up! USA Wrestling just wont and cant have the creativity and flexibility to be their own media company (nor should they) and businesses like LSV and Wasserman dont care about Wrestling. All they want to do is rape wrestling for as much as possible while leaving hungry fans ultimately disappointed.

USA Wrestling should let me promote the sport and their guys. I can do amazing things. I want to promote Steve Mocco, Donny Prtizlaff, and Damion Hahn to the fullest extent and I will do an amazing job.

As You sit down to watch bowling this weekend realize that preventing me from filming the Russian/American dual is the exact reason why wrestling is getting beaten out by bowling. The best bowlers, like the dude in the pic, can make hundreds of thousands of dollars in America(Reference King Pin). USA Wrestling sure does like to cut their own noses off to spite their faces. So what else gets more coverage and exposure: I'll start it off, see if you can think of something:

Martin,
I was drawn to this particularly blog due to the added comments today. I would be very interested to hear you re-address this topic now in order to see how things may have changed in the last 18 months or so.

The sport has a culture issue in the business area, that is the problem. I produced a wrestling show in conjunction with a studio in Royal Oak, Michigan. The same studio produced all of the Red Wings, Pistons Basketball and Tiger Baseball for PASS Sports (Fox Sports bought them out). Before I walked through their door, they never saw a wrestling match. The went crazy over how great a sport it was for teleivision. I won't get into the details of why. I realized then that there are some other problems. It isn't the wrestling itself though. It is how and what for our resources are leveraged for the most bang for our buck, in my opinion. Martin is much closer to some of those important answers.

Wrestling needs to get scantly clad bikini girls to strut the period numbers around the arena or something.

Sport is cool, but only if you do everything correctly, otherwise it may even hurt. I've recently found a good ebook http://www.ebook-search-queen.com/ebook/exer/exercise-&-sport-science.all.html , which teaches how to go info sports correctly.

Renee and David I disagree. I think listing all the sports above wrestling will open peoples minds. Everyone knows that wrestling is more exciting than darts, but why does darts get more coverage and exposure? IT is because of the type of actions and lack of leadership that I experienced from USA Wrestling over the weekend. Asking the question is just shaping the problem in a different way making it more clear for people to understand.

How Can we change it? Through the people.

BTW John Frizz I do need a blog (and comment) editor...you got someone in mind? In the mean time I'll try harder on my grammar.

Keep the flo going Martin, if you ruffle a few feathers along the way, you're doing something right. Our sport needs more people like you, but you my friend are having a huge impact. One person can make a difference.

Flo Wrestling has done an amazing job promoting the sport of wrestling. Flo has and will continue to change the wrestling image. Martin you are a stand up dude. Kool KAT. First class. But we all need to be patient and find ways to synergize with USA. Its important to the future of the sport.

Martin,
I strongly admire your conviction for wrestling and I agree with you that the PR aspect of our sports is sorely lacking. That said, and having much respect and love for your website, I strongly suggest you carefully consider the following two points of advice:

1.) Edit your blog posts before you post them. You seem to be an intelligent and thoughtful individual, yet at times it is nearly impossible to follow your train of thought simply because you forget to read through and edit your blogs before you post them. This leaves the reader wondering on several occassions the true intent of your words. Your above post is a prime example of this.

2. Watch what you say about USA Wrestling. I agree with you that their decision to prohibit you from filming this event seems backwards, however you must remember that this is the same organization that allowed you to repeatedly film its coaches, athletes and trainers at their training center in Colorado Springs as well in Azerbaijan at the World Championships. Publicly critizing the national organization of the sport which you promote is not good for business. They are a powerful body and I am certain their leaders visit your website.

That said, I do want to commend you on your efforts in support of our great sport. Your website has changed the face of wrestling and for that you should be immensely proud.

Martin - I think we're all pickin up what you're puttin down. But listing ridiculous "sports" that actually get coverage (seriously...poker? not unless they make it full contact Texas hold em) doesn't get us anywhere. So what would be the next step? Thousands of letters from angry fans? Contacting people/sponsors with leverage? Egging someone's car at 1:42 AM next Saturday night? You've got a ton of influence with your little Flowrestling venture here...don't overlook it, USE IT.

I remember in the 2004 olympics wrestling was scheduled at 2 A.M. on like a thursday night. I was just a kid and I stayed up all night to watch it, but instead, they had a womens 15K walk or something like that. Are you kidding me? Olympic walking over two people beating the hell out of each other? What is wrong with people? Flo you are doing an awesome job.

BTW...I am pretty sure that the BigTen is the only conference wherein every membering school has a wrestling team. Not only that, most years, ALL 11 schools are ranked in the top 25. What does a sport have to do to get some pub!?!?!?!?!

No lie...I've seen water polo more than I care to on TV. Also, The BigTen Network has begun. It is a station DEDICATED to the BigTen ONLY. I've e-mailed, on a few occasions, the programming people concerning wrestling in the BigTen. Not once have I gotten a response.

Long live FLOWRESTLING!!!!!!
