What's wrong in Cali?

Martin Floreani | Profile

The fresno area is full of wrestling nuts. More dense per capita than Jersey. I really havent seen it that crazy in any place. I love the passion they have for wrestling even if it has taken a steady turn into fanaticism. The rivalry between Selma and Clovis is at another level. These teams really hate each other. And yes, "hate" is a strong word. I hear, maybe to the delight of some Selma fans, that the Tirapelle's got suspended from coaching their arch rivals and the defending State Champions, Clovis HS. Selma fans shouldnt be happy but probably are about the developments. I cant really blame them for being happy, they are in a competitive mindset and anything that gives them an advantage is a good thing. However, the fact is that a NCAA Champion turned California State team champion coach Adam Tirapelle, is out of coaching in their area for at least a year (who knows if he ever comes back). In this whole ordeal there has been vague statements by the administrators with nothing that completely adds up. Rumors have been spread that this has its roots in recruiting violations.

What the haters never understand is that success breeds success. Parents are always going to want their kids to be taught by the best. They will move into the area and make sure their kids have the best teachers, and there isnt anything wrong with it. Raise your hand if you want your kids to be taught by teachers with a proven record of success on multiple levels. Maybe this was a campaign against Steve Tirapelli and Adam was thrown in for good measure. Either way Im pretty sure the kids education was not taken into effect when making the decision. Instead it probably was the right mixture of politics, personal vendettas and, of course, success that did Adam Tirapelle in. I have learned as much from wrestling about life than I did in the classroom, and i believe that Clovis just lost one of the best teachers they had. If I were Adam I probably wouldnt be back at Clovis next year, I would go and coach somewhere else. Start from the ground up and start winning championships. Parents, seeing how good the team was, will started moving into the area to have their kids be educated by one of the best. At that time I would be ready for the haters to start accusing me of cheating all over again. Of Course that is only if I were Adam Tirapelle with his coaching abilities.

So unfortunately Adam Tirapelle and his father are suspended for a year, however fans from schools like Selma should be secretly calling Adam Tirapelle asking him to stay in the valley to continue coaching their arch rivals. If Selma wants to be a national player in wrestling they are going to have to have top notch competition locally. Steel sharpens steel. You have to take a step back to see the forrest from the rivalry that engulfs the mindset in the fresno valley. If Adam decides not to coach Clovis anymore expect Selma to have more "success". But "success" is one hell of a relative term. The fact is a revamped and reorganized Selma will go down as never being able to have beaten a Clovis with Adam Tirapelle on the staff. That is why if I were a fan at Selma, which I am, I would be just waiting for the day for Adam Tirepelle to be coaching Clovis again, marking a rare event that Selma wrestling fans have the same interest as Clovis wrestlers and parents.

come on get real, saying cali is not good at wrestling is just like saying PA and OH are not good at wrestling. Cali is one of the best states in wrestling every year, not every couple but every year, same as PA and OH. And cali has the hardest state tournament to win hands down.

Dude, this is ridiculous. Maybe you guys haven't seen my traps. Once I flex them infront of the school board this will all go away! It's not my fault i'm sooo sweet that everyone wants to wrestle for me!!

I would like to have the last word before we go into the New Year. Personalities are loved and hated....politics is above board and below board...wrestling programs extend beyond both personalities and politics by providing an arena for concentration, skills, discipline, talent, sportsmanship and growth by which all prosper. Flowrestling connects us to those arenas allowing increased participation and enthusiasm. So, let's let Cali take care of their own business as best (or as poorly) as they can, while we get on with the business of better Flowrestling in 2009. So that's it Cali, we've got to say.... "Finito"!

It's funny , if you ask me? Tirepelle got what he deserved! He is the one called and complained about the old (Selma Coach) to the Selma Superintendent . The Coach who was dismissed without a reasonable explanation. He even called Athletic Directors of other schools, trying to get other coaches fired."What goes around comes around!"

Welch moved on to the wrestlebacks against fifth-seeded Scott Winston of Rutgers. With the score tied at one apiece and just 30 seconds remaining, Winston dropped Welch for three points and eventually won, 6-1. In Tuesday’s nightcap session, Welch is set to take on Anthony Jones of Michigan State in the battle for fifth place.

jersey boy...you have lost your mind...send your boys out to a california tournament...such as five counties, doc b., or our state tournament for example...which by the way is one division, but im sure you knew that before making that ridiculous comment...since tirapelle has taken over at clovis high he has put 10+ wrestlers inot college programs...how many has your high school had in the last 10 years? his sons are all-americans and ncaa champs...think before you speak out against ca wrestling...

california has no talent. they cant compare to the passion and dedication we have out here on the east coast. too bad for those coaches...seems like a good wrestler and good coach, but he would never be able to produce national caliber kids.

Martin, Listen to yourself. Wrestling is an extra curricular activity. When jerk-offs get this crazy it just ruins sports for kids. It's sick.

I understand Martin's point that "success breeds success" and this seems to be true in some cases. In my state (VA), Weber/Dresser, Fiser, Martin, and . . . eh . . . even Strickland (God rest his soul) attracted (i.e. recruited) talent via demonstrative success in the sport of wrestling.

However, this ain't always the case. What about the middling Squires and their transfer to Colonial Forge form Christiansburg from somewhere in NJ? Donald Squires (Dad) suggested that C-Forge was the choice because he was re-locating to NOVA to work at the Pentagon and Swink was the man. Well, the Pentagon is about an hour an a half +++ from C-forge on a Monday morning and there are about 10 coaches more "success"-ful (circa 2005) than Swink between Stafford and Arlington . . . what about Bryan Hazard or Seth Cameron?
Swink, Hurst, Hill ?. . . come on, why do these guys get the recruits?

It is sad to see anyone railroaded or get away with something -no matter the zip code. However, lets reason for a bit logically.
A. They're not guilty and the facts bear that out, then the district loses two things: Yet another state championship (which they might get anyways : ) and worse yet two highly accomplished coaches.
B. They're guilty and the facts bear that out, then the district loses two things: Yet another state championship (which they might get anyways : ) and worse yet two highly accomplished coaches.

Both of these scenarios separately are equally possible in the minds of both sides.
CUSD has always liked it's championships and the coaches who bring them... so why doesn't this click?
In the business world, can you say and do anything you want-even if it's whats best? Sounds like a mantra that I have heard many a time from the Tirapelle's own mouths.
I'm not gonna take sides because what I do know is that it ain't much. But here are the facts, scenario A, B, and the Tirapelle's mantra...
On a side note, if they go away does that mean their guilty or hurt and won't place their families in this position again...if they come back, does that mean their innocent or under a more district control. ie district behavior orders?

There is a problem with Clovis Unified School District Coordinator of co-curricular activities, Dennis Lindsay. He has displayed unequal treatment. The problem has been both in wrestling and football. It is not only unjust treatment for Clovis High but Clovis East as well.

Great post. Our rivals are really the best thing we have going for us in terms of building publicity, awareness, and broader public support for wrestling in these difficult funding times. Martin referenced Jersey, and the Shore Conference simply would not be what it is if there was not the steady Jackson/Southern rivalry, etc. They are the best thing we have going for us :)

Everyone in the area that knows anything about this knows that it is the Clovis Unified Athletic director who has a personal vendetta against the Tirapelles. This guy is a jerk, and nobody in the CIF organization even likes him.

The Tirapelle's are innocent until proven guilty. At this point, it is pure speculation to the reason(s) why they were suspended. With the loss of Adam and Steve to the Central Valley, it only hurts the competition.

Hopefully, they will be reinstated.

Thank you for writing this article! I for one could not have said it any better. I have always agreed with success breed success. I always partner with the successful people at my firm.

The only thing I will have to disagree with is that Selma hates Clovis. I think that statement might be a bit harsh of the Selma of today.
The Central Valley does not want to lose the Tirapelle'sk, they have a lot to offer all kids in this valley.

Yes and proud of it. Martin, the only thing you could have added was that people who have a level of commitment and greatness in their own right know that when they are handed a lemon, they will make lemonade. Yes the Tirapelles will come out way ahead of all the other people who are so busy being political movers and shakers.

Please add some links to news articles about this and let us know about appeals process.....if any.

Martin, perhaps you are right about the Tirapelles, but in the state of Nevada we have massive recruiting problems. Kids that live in zones for different schools miraculously end up wrestling for Cimarron-Memorial High School. These zoning "mix-ups" are seriously NIAA infractions and go on with penalty. If parents want their kids to wrestle for the best, they should have to abide by the rules to do so and that means that if they are zoned for one school and want their kids to go to another, they should have to move to that new zone.

Come on Martin,
We don't hate Clovis nor are we happy that the Tirappelles were suspended for a year. They are great coaches and like you said it would be more rewarding doing well against Clovis at full strength, without any excuses.

I dont think he alluded to it being Selma fans that was at the root of this. I think it was more of "its everybody's loss" type of thing

I don't beleive that it is the Selma fans that have caused the Tirapelle's downfall, but instead. It was the jealousy and hatred within the CUSD. The Administrator that led the charge and is the Districts Athtletci Commissioner is I believe the Dad of one of the Clovis West Coaches and has been seen openly frustrated in the booth at football games when Clovis West lost to Clovis East. Not very impartial for a DISTRICT Admion istrator.

very good point. Losing the Tirapelle's will diminish the quality of wrestling in that area.
