Terry Brands goes to Iowa

Martin Floreani | Profile
October 1, 2008

So it is official, Terry brands, Henry Cejudo and Steve Mocco are off to Iowa. Those two along with Mike Zadick and Doug Schwab make four 2008 olympians training at one school. Don't forget about the slew of other contenders starting with Jared Frayer. NCAA wrestling is again facing the black clowd of Iowa hawkeyes that seem to hang in the background of everyone's conciousness. This black clowd leads to tenative 18 year old boys hesitating to the wrestlers in the black and gold with a determined Brands coach in their corner, check that, two determined brands coaches. Both will be expect total domination.

These perceptions leads to an increased confidence and expectations for Iowa wrestlers as they slowly morph into what people view them as: trained killers that the brand brothers specifically sculpted. It becomes a self fulfilling destiny for their competitors. This does not imply that the Iowa hawkeyes don't deserve what they get afterall they work their butts off. Nor does it imply they couldn't win without this wave of confidence and by the aura of the brands brothers.

Terry brands is off to a school where he can live without the politics that are so abundant at the otc. Its not really suprising that he makes this move as Terry Brands might be the worse bureaucrat of all time. He doesn't like to play games nor kiss ass. It is against his nature. God bless him.

With him goes his faithful following of Mocco and Cejudo who were the most successful of the Olympic freestyle team in 2008. This leads a baren otc that Zeke Jones takes over.

Rich Bender, the president of USA wrestling is in the buisness of producing Olympic gold medalists. Rich benders problem, or a symptom of it, is that one of his biggest assets is moving away from freestyle and into NCAA wrestling where the politics aren't nearly as thick. Making matters worse is that He takes along loyal disciples who happen to be America's best freestylers.

If there were to be only one truth in this world that I know it is that Terry brands loves wrestling. He lives his life like it were a wrestling match, intense, pure and full of his free will. Sometimes this is to his detriment as life isn't a wrestling match. These are insignificant details to Terry Brands. He pushes forward away from the otc and back into college wrestling.

At Iowa you can expect Terry Brands goals to be to create a dominating dynasty that sets him up for the next Big 10 or Big 12 head coach opening. If and when this happens he will leave to have something of his own. Afterall this is his wrestling match and his free will, not his brothers.

When Terry does have a program of his own the collegiate wrestling nation as a whole will breathe a collective sigh of relief. After all, at that time you will have the Brands brothers competing against each other and splitting top recruits that are more likely to train in that Iowa Style and culture.

If Terry Brands is such a great Coach, what happened in the Olympics. Where is all the Gold that The USA was bringing back with our great Coaching. I think we had the right athletes, just not the right coaches. Terry Brands style of coaching faded away when the neanderthals disappeared.

First off, "clowd"? Are you serious? I think he means "cloud". Also, Cejudo is going to Iowa to train with the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, same with Mocco and Schwab.

Brands will most likely run the Hawkeye WC and have Olympic hopefuls come to train with him as well as being an assisstant to Tom. He said in one of the articles about how people tell him that he won't be able to train Olympic champs in IC and he says that that is wrong. They would be training full time against a wealth of young, talented wrestlers. Cejudo primarily trained with Brands and it paid off. If there is success there, then more will come to join and wrestle in IC. With all the support that Iowa Wrestling gets and the new renovations to Carver-Hawkeye Arena there could be awesome facilities to lure people to come and train. What high school wrestler wouldn't not want to continue their career by wrestling Olympians? Another question, why in the hell didnt they hire him as the head coach, seems like a dumb decision not to, he gave up head coaching jobs along the way to be an assistant with you and then you don't throw him a bone after you fire the head guy?

Garrett Lowney medaled in the Olympics before wrestling in college. Also, didn't Barry Davis Silver in the 84 Olympics and then wrestle for Iowa in 85? I don't think the money they get for medalling causes any ineligibility. I don't know about endorsements though?

It sure helped Mike Za and Doug Schwab to stay put in Iowa, while training for the Olympics. See Olympic results for clarification. All this has done is created more division amongst our wrestlers as it seems to me that Brands took his ball and went home. It was clear that the people who stayed and trained full time at the OTC performed best. The ones who decided to do their own thing, didn't do much.

Regarding the amateur status of Cejudo. If you go to the Olympics as an amateur, it doesn't make sense that when you win you suddenly become a pro because of the prize money. If this were true then noone could come back 4 yrs later and compete again. I am sure the money can be sheltered in trust fund or used for expenses only. And lets not forget that the Olympics is NOT truely just amateurs anymore in every other sport!!(basketball, tennis, track, to name a few)

Cejudo is not wrestling at Iowa. The speculation on this is just dumb. I would be really interested in knowing if Martin talked directly Henry and Henry told him he was going there or is he just speculating that he is moving to Iowa to train with Terry.

I really hope that Henry Cejudo gets elegibility because I think it will be really cool to see him wrestle in college after already winning a gold medal in the olympics. It will also be interesting to see how he does in folkstyle wrestling.

I agree, its probably not great for USA wrestling... Ok, its downright bad, but he wanted the head job, and they didn't give it to him. I don't think its hard feelings, I just feel like he wanted to be in Iowa unless he had the opportunity to be the head coach, so he is doing what is best for him.

Re:Hawks - yes he has received money from his Olympic championship. The U.S.O.C. gives each gold medal winner $25,000 in prize money ($15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze), $15,000 from USA Wrestling and about $25K more from private donors. This is well documented. He is no longer considered to be an amateur and, thus, loses his elgibility with the NCAA.

Why wouldn't Cejudo have eligibility? He has not received any money from competing in the Olympics so how would he be ineligible. I believe Cejudo is coming to train for international competition anyway.

We had our best olympic years when the HWC was at its height under Gable. This will make us better internationally. The smart wrestlers will train in Iowa instead of Colo Springs.

Its a damn shame for america thats for sure . The otc has been full of foreigners who dont seem to put there heart into usa wrestling ( not all but most) and Terry wore his heart on his sleeve and would die for america what a step back for USA wrestling! Good luck though Ter and if in Jersey call us!

I don't believe Cejudo can wrestle in college. He can still train there though. With Mocco and Cejudo leaving the OTC, this is going to divide everyone even more, IMO. This was the problem people spoke about why our teams didn't perform as they should've because everyone was off doing their own thing. It'll be interesting how this plays out, but while it may be good for Iowa, I don't think its going to be good for Team USA.

I don't think the two brothers will work on a long term solution.Henry Cejudo will be a NCAA champ right away within 2 years.
