Who does he think he is?
April 27, 2008
Matt Azevedo had the audacity to do what he wanted. Who did he think he was? He was a good to mediocre Big XII wrestler who never even became a Division 1 All-American. What was he thinking trying to wrestle at the next level? Really all he was doing was taking up space and others people's time in a sport where it just wasnt meant to be.
He still was just hanging on to that habit of competition. (He never was a state champ either but placing in the state of California meant he could at least participate on Iowa States team.) He was being selfish and a little bit immature trying to wrestle for this long. Afterall it took money and time for him to fly across the country and get beat in tournaments time and time again. Afterall he was an adult...time to grow up and get a real job and contribute to society.
So it went, maybe an overachiever maybe just average Matt decided to continue on. He climbed the US ladder but never won, always lost somewhere down the line to a pedigree of one form or another. Matt wasnt a pedigree....he was Matt Azevedo which meant he was never meant to be.
Who did Matt Azevedo think he was on Saturday Night? His performance in the finals was completely selfish, Pinning one of America's best pedigree's and hopes for the future. How could he do that to America? Something about Matt Azevedo has changed since I first knew him. Something deep inside him has finally flipped through one match and now Matt Azevedo has reached one of the mountain tops of our sport in America.
Congratulations Matt Azevedo for your audacity and performance.
