When you love to shop, car insurance may still not be on your top shopping priority list. However, the purchase of vehicle insurance is an important component of a smart budget. Whether you drive or not, if you are the owner of a vehicle that is being operated, there should be an insurance policy covering the vehicle. Anytime you operate a vehicle on public roadways, you are responsible for driving safely and for paying for costs of an accident caused by you. Insurance coverage prevents a financial meltdown after an accident.

Vehicle insurance is an agreement between you and the insurance company that you will pay in a certain amount of money each policy period. In return, the insurer will cover the costs of the specified expenses that result from an accident in which you or your vehicle are involved. The terms of the policy usually are very detailed and specific. The amount is stated and usually remains the same unless there are changes to the policy. The detail comes in specifying the type and amount of coverage included.

Any or all of three important types of insurance for your vehicle are the usual purchases for car policies. The first covers damages to the other car or driver. Some jurisdictions assign a "blame" factor to drivers. If you are deemed to be 60 percent responsible for the accident, that is the portion of the costs that you or your insurance company will pay.

When there is damage to your own vehicle or if you have injuries, you will have associated expenses as well. This type of insurance coverage is usually optional, even if the previous category is mandated by law. This cover pays to repair your car if you back into a garage door or if you need to visit a doctor following an accident where you are to blame.

In some jurisdictions, you must purchase uninsured motorist coverage. This pays for your injuries or damages if another vehicle hits your car and the other driver doesn't have insurance. Without such coverage, you could be injured in an accident and it could cause financial ruin for you and your family.

Your decision to purchase insurance may not be an option. The laws of your geographical location might require purchase of vehicle insurance. Fines can be hefty in some instances. Other locales force you into compliance by a type of universal basic insurance with the cost collected in some way other than direct policy cost. For example, insurance coverage might be provided through a fuel tax or assessment amount.

Whether you purchase directly or are part of an insurance pool, you should be doing everything possible to reduce the costs of coverage.Fewer accidents means lower costs. Safer cars means lower costs. Don't make the mistake of buying less coverage than you really need, just to save money.

Car insurance expenses are affected by who is driving, where you drive and the type of vehicles insured. You can look online to find good price quotes. There are many discounts available, it is just a matter of identifying which discounts will work for your situation.
