Although Ben and his brother John never won a state title they were driven. Ben lost int he finals of the Wisconsin state tournament. He didnt know whether he would wrestle again but a trip to Iowa State where the world team trials was being held changed his mind. There he was recruited by Iowa State. His drive and environment of being with Gable carried him to a starting position and All American status by his sophomore year. His Junior year he was a national champion.
Ben Peterson went on to compete in the 1972 Olympics and earned a Gold Medal, he continued to train and in 1976 took the Silver in Montreal.
