John Peterson was just about the most unlikely of wrestlers coming out of high school to every become an Olympian much less two time Olympic medalist and Olympic Champion. He grew up in Wisconsin and never made it to state in High School. He went to University of Wisconsin Stout (an NAIA) school. His brother opened the door to Dan Gable and Iowa State and the same year that John Peterson took 5th in the NAIA he also qualified for the World Team.
John Peterson along with his brother remain active in the sport. John currently assists the University of Minnesota wrestlers.
