What 2 Watch 4: Week 2

It’s the second official weekend of wrestling season, but with some big teams just getting started, there are going to be a lot of questions answered! While we’re going to have a lot of screens streaming wrestling all weekend, here’s what you can’t miss this weekend.

#3 Ohio State vs #12 Virginia Tech

When: 7 pm ET

Where: Columbus, Ohio

Streaming: B1G+

Listen: FloWrestling

The Ohio State - Virginia Tech dual has become one of the best preChristmas duals every year. Last year it came down to heavyweight with Tate Orndorff securing the victory for the Buckeyes. With similar lineups for both teams, I expect another amazing dual. The biggest difference this year will be the addition of Jesse Mendez (and maybe Nic Bouzakis at 141 with Dylan D’Emilio getting injured last week) to the Buckeye lineup. Mendez already passed a huge test last weekend in Lucas Byrd. He’ll have another All-American in Sam Latona Friday night.

Penn State Opener

When: 7 pm ET

Where: University Park, Pennsylvania

Streaming: B1G+

Most teams got things started last weekend, but the Nittany Lions aren’t most teams. That’s why even though Penn State will be favored in every match except 125, many will still tune in with eager eyes (myself included). Can Gary Steen be productive at 125? Will Beau Bartlett be better at 141? The debut of Shayne Van Ness! Is there any chance we see Levi Haines at 157? We won’t get definitive answers to all of these questions on Friday night, but it could be a good indicator as to what we’ll see from the Nittany Lions’ lightweights this season.

Three Solid Open Tournaments

The Bison Open, the Tiger Style Invitational, and the App State Invitational go down on Saturday. You can watch the Tiger Style and App State Invites on FloWrestling, but to my knowledge at this point, the Bison Open will not be streamed. You will have to follow the results on TrackWrestling. It’s unfortunate the Bison Open will not be streamed as it will give us the biggest story and potential matchup of Saturday: the return of Brayton Lee. After being sidelined last year with an injury, Lee is one of the top title threats at 157 lbs this season. He could get tested early against #6 Jared Franek if they both wrestle.

The Tiger Style will have Missouri, Illinois, Cal Poly, Little Rock, Maryland, and Drexel, providing potential matches such as #8 Brock Mauller vs #15 Dom Demas. Brackets will be on TrackWrestling. The App State Invite will have App State, Kent State, Edinboro, Virginia, Ohio, Stanford, and Air Force providing potential matches like Shane Griffith vs Justin McCoy. Brackets will be on FloArena.

#7 Oklahoma State vs #15 Lehigh

When: noon ET

Where: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Streaming: FloWrestling

This will be our first look at the 2022-23 Oklahoma State Cowboys. They’ll be taking on a tough Lehigh team that looked solid in a win last week against a tough Oregon State team. The matchup I’m most looking forward to will be at 184. After four years in the Big 12, 4X national qualifier Tate Samuelson transferred to Lehigh but couldn’t escape the Cowboys. He’ll be taking on 2021 All-American Travis Wittlake, who will be making his 184 debut up two weights from 165.

Journeymen WrangleMania

When: all-day

Where: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Streaming: Rokfin

Frank Popolizio got 11 D1 teams together for some good duals all throughout the day on Saturday. The marquee matchups occur at 5 pm ET between Nebraska and North Carolina State will dual while Rutgers and Arizona State are simultaneously dualing on another mat. The match I’m looking forward to the most is #3 Peyton Robb, Nebraska vs #7 Ed Scott, NC State. It will be a heated rematch of last year’s controversial win for Robb.

Watch Peyton Robb controversially pin Ed Scott at NCAAs last year.

Iowa Opener

When: 2 pm ET

Where: Iowa City, Iowa

Streaming: B1G+

The Hawkeyes welcome the Lancers of California Baptist to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday. Similar to Penn State, Iowa returns a lot of last year’s starters but there are still some question marks. Tom Brands answered a lot of questions at his press conference earlier this week.

Listen to Tom Brands talk about Iowa’s opening season lineup below.

But some question marks still remain: how good is Brody Teske going to be at 133? Who’s going to get the start at 157? Can the Hawks get any production out of the weights they won’t have end-of-season starters (125 and 174)? We’ll get more insight into these questions Sunday afternoon.
