Could Mark Perry once again coach against his own family?  

A few years ago he coached Illinois 174-pounder Jordan Blanton against his own brother, Chris Perry. A few years before that, Perry coached Nittany Lion Freshman Quentin Wright against Chris as well. It looks possible that weÂ’ll see PerryÂ’s protege, Isaiah Martinez, take on PerryÂ’s cousin, Joseph (Jo Jo) Smith.  Smith is the son of Oklahoma State head Coach John Smith, Mark PerryÂ’s Uncle. Both are set to compete Sunday at the Reno TOC (Live on FloWrestling here)!

Jo Jo has already defeated the likes of Chance Marsteller, Ryan Blees and nationally ranked Joe LaVallee and Dylan Cottrell.  Standing on the other side of the mat could be IllinoisÂ’ NCAA Champion and still undefeated Isaiah Martinez.  I-Mar is as dominant and entertaining as anyone in college wrestling, still yet to taste defeat as an attached wrestler.

Martinez is known for his brutal pace, dynamic takedowns and an unmistakable swagger.  His arsenal is varied with the ability to blow you out if you dare to open it up against him or he can grind you out with riding time and hand fighting if you play it close.  Martinez has been dominant all year with only one match having gone to a decision, a 2-0 win over ASUÂ’s Oliver Pierce.  He has won every other match by tech or pin.  We could see a very #NotTame version of I-Mar this weekend looking to quell any doubts and send a message as to where the pecking order lies at 157. 

Like Martinez, Smith is also undefeated.  His style and points almost all come from the neutral position.  HeÂ’s a takedown artist with the ability to hit multiple takedowns from both sides.  HeÂ’s a fantastic athlete and can operate both from space and in the ties.  

The question in this match will come down to Smith being able to handle the pressure, power and athleticism from Martinez.  Joseph is a long shot, and may get blown out, but as we know with True Freshman, their readiness and progression can be underestimated.  Just ask Kaid Brock.
