FloWrestling will offer a free livestream of the induction ceremonies at the 39th Honors Weekend from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The stream will begin at 7:55 pm tonight.

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame will host its 39th Honors Weekend in Stillwater, Okla. this weekend. Included in the weekend are the following activities:


• Social and Presentation of Plaques on Friday, June 5, at 6:00 p.m. at National Wrestling Hall of Fame

• Golf Tournament luncheon on Saturday, June 6, 12:00 noon, Stillwater Golf and Country Club

• 39th Honors Banquet and induction ceremony on Saturday, June 6, 7:00 p.m., OSU Student Union Ballroom

Four wrestling legends will be inducted as Distinguished Members of the Class of 2015. They include Frank Bettucci, Joe Gonzales, Sammie Henson and Gregory Johnson.

Henson, Gonzales and Bettucci each represented the United States as Olympic freestyle wrestlers, with Henson winning an Olympic silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Gonzales competing at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Calif. and Bettucci competing at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. In addition, Henson and Gonzales won World bronze medals for the United States. Henson, Gonzales and Bettucci all won national freestyle titles. 

Henson was a two-time NCAA champion for Clemson and also wrestled for Missouri. Gonzales won NCAA Div. I and Div. II titles for California State University, Bakersfield, wrestled for Oklahoma and also won a California Junior College title for East Los Angeles CC. Johnson was a three-time NCAA champion for Michigan State, the first from the Big Ten to win three national titles. 

Henson is currently head coach at West Virginia and had numerous college assistant positions including stints at Oklahoma, Missouri, Cal-Poly and Nebraska. Bettucci and Johnson also had extensive coaching experience on the college level.

Outstanding American recipient Mike Golic is the co-host of ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike show that currently simulcasts on ESPN2. He is a former NFL defensive lineman and television football commentator. Golic wrestled and played football for Notre Dame. He has been a strong advocate for the sport of wrestling.

Medal of Courage winner Mike Powell served as the head coach at Oak Park and River Forest High School in Illinois, leading the team to two dual team state championships and four individual state championships. He coached 10 individual state champions and 31 all-state wrestlers. Powell was diagnosed with polymyositis in 2009, a chronic inflammation of the muscles and a progressive autoimmune disease that has affected the physical aspects of his coaching duties.

Order of Merit winner Dave “Doc” Bennett has been contributing to the advancement of wrestling through work in coaches education, videography, and coaching. He created numerous instructional videos, and producing television shows. Bennett served as the National Developmental Freestyle Coach from 2000-2009

Lifetime Achievement for Officials winner Kenny Ritchie has officiated high school and collegiate wrestling for 33 years. He has officiated 27 Oklahoma High School State Tournaments in Oklahoma. Ritchie has officiated 12 NCAA DI National Championships, eight NCAA DII National Championships, eight NCAA/NWCA National Dual Tournaments and more.

Dave Schultz High School Excellence recipient Zahid Valencia is a three-time California high school state champion who earned the Outstanding Wrestler award three times at the event. He put together a 164-1 record while at St. John Bosco High School. He claimed two USA Wrestling Freestyle Junior National titles and one Greco- Roman Junior National title. He will attend Arizona State in the fall.

Tricia Saunders High School Excellence recipient Marizza Biruetta is a three-time Washington state high school champion, becoming the first girl to ever win a state title for Grandview High School. She is also a state freestyle champion. At the national level, Birrueta won a USA Wrestling Junior National title last year and a UWW Junior National title this spring. She will attend Oklahoma City University in the fall.
