Top 10 CKLV Sleepers

Everyone knows Stieber, Ness, Green, Gwiaz and Coon are complete hammers. But you don’t have to wait for Saturday night for the huge matchups. With over 80 ranked wrestlers and tons of young talent, there are some guys you can’t sleep on in these early rounds. Here’s my top 10 sleepers for the CKLV.

10 Zeke Moisey-WVU: Zeke’s like an 11 seed? Crazy dude. There’s a reason The Bull pulled his Redshirt. The kid is ready. He’s physically able to compete with some of the better guys here. I like his leg attacks and we’ve seen he can scramble with just about anyone. Watch Zeke make noise in Vegas.

9 Alec Pantaleo-Michigan: I think Pantaleo is a great talent. While mostly unproven, I think he has the goods to compete in a down field at 149. I love his athleticism and upside. Last year a Michigan True Freshman made noise at 157 in Brian Murphy. Could Alec do the same?

8 Jake Short-Minnesota: The NCAA future is in the hands of Jake Short and a few of his 2nd tier counterpart out in Minnesota. The Gopher faithful need Short to be more than just a qualifier. I think Short makes an extremely deep run despite being unseeded. His offense is limited, but pace, positioning are on his side here.

7 Nick Wanzek-Minnesota: There’s some cautious optimism for Nick Wanzek from the Gopher faithful. He’s looked solid early notching a few ranked wins. Still only a 7 seed here and I think he beats that seed with potentially top 4 upside. He’s not on Massa’s level, I don’t think but guys behind him he may be able to compete with.

6 Josh Terao-American: Watched this dude at the Hokie Open. He’s dang good. Needs to be ready to go for 7 minutes and has to get out on bottom, but this kid will have a few WOW moments this weekend, i’d nearly bet on it! (When in Vegas…)

5 Max Huntley-Michigan: When this guy’s healthy, he’s freaking tough as nails. He dominated Phil Wellington earlier this year. He’s not on the Schiller/Gadson/Snyder level in all likelihood, but he’s going to impress this weekend, I feel fairly confident in that.

4 Davonte Mahomes: You want to talk about big upside? That’s Mahomes. He’s young, but he can hand fight well which is an area where Freshman can be exploited. He’s got solid attacks to the legs as well as ducks. He’s got all the goods. Is he Storley or Kokesh? No, but he could very well compete with anyone else in the field.

3 Brett Pfarr-Minnesota: In between Wrangler Ad’s and pitchin’ the old pigskin around in Mississippi, Brett is actually a pretty dang good 184 pounder for Minnesota! I loved watching him last year during the Freestyle Season. He’s got great drags and leg attacks as well as solid defense and scrambling. As an 8 seed I think he’s crazy underrated and will easily out-perform 8th. I’m not sure if he’s a finalist contender or not (especially if he’s on Dean’s side), but he’s on the periphery at the very least.

2 Anthony Ashnault-Rutgers: I said in my Floinsider preview I love how Ashnault goes about his business. He’s got great leg attacks, super hustle and a hard-nosed attitude. I am partially just excited to watch him compete over the course of two days, but I really think he could have a huge, and i mean HUGE weekend. We’ll see how well he does, but this kid has all the goods to do well. As the 8 seed I think he’s got a rough draw w/ Stieber early, but beyond that I see a great weekend for him.

1 Taylor Meeks-Oregon State: At this time last year Taylor Meeks was ranked 1st in the Country. Read it again. I don’t think he forgot how to wrestle in that time. A combination of injuries and other factors prevented Taylor from coming anywhere near the expectations many had for him last year. However, down a weight (though I thought he was big at 197) perhaps this is the change of scenery Taylor needed to succeed at an All American level again. He is dangerous on the mat and super difficult to score on. Can he beat Gabe Dean? I’m not sure, but if he can go 7 minutes at 184 he’s going to be a disastrous matchup for many guys. Don’t sleep on Taylor Meeks!

Those are mine, now who am I sleeping on!?  Comment below!
