Peppelman, Keith remain in the hunt at 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – 11th-seeded Walter Peppelman and Steven Keith are still alive at the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships after the first day of competition at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Both Peppelman and Keith will need to win four straight matches on Friday to reach the podium. Peppelman is attempting to become just the third three-time All-American in program history while Keith is seeking to join Peppelman as one of only eight Crimson to earn All-America honors in back-to-back years.

Peppelman, the lone Crimson to earn a seed, put himself in a hole early as he was pinned by Ohio's Spartak Chino at the 1:05 mark in the first round. The senior bounced back in the consolation bracket, earning a 3-1 decision over Jake O'Hara of Columbia to advance to Friday. He will now face fifth-seeded James Fleming of Clarion in a rematch of last year's eighth-place match.

Peppelman found himself in the same situation a year ago but was up to the test, winning five straight matches to place eighth.

Keith found himself at the other end of the spectrum as he recorded a fall over Oklahoma State's Julian Feikert 39 seconds into the second period. Keith was met by top-seeded Hunter Stieber of Ohio State in the second round and dropped a 7-3 decision to the Buckeye. The senior will take on Penn State's Bryan Pearsall in the wrestleback bracket on Friday.

Sophomore James Fox, in his second appearance at the national championship, went 0-2 on Thursday to be eliminated from the tournament. Fox opened with a 9-4 loss to Phillip Wellington of Ohio and fell to Iowa's Nathan Burak in the wrestlebacks, 4-0.

Action will resume in Des Moines Friday at 11 a.m. EST. Friday's morning session will be broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN3 while ESPNU will provide coverage of the afternoon session beginning at 7 p.m. EST.
