DES MOINES, Iowa – Lehigh’s five
qualifiers head to Iowa for the 83rd NCAA wrestling championships at Wells Fargo
Arena in Des Moines, as the national tournament returns to Iowa for the first
time since 2001. The Mountain Hawks have returned to the national spotlight with
back-to-back eighth place finishes at the last two NCAA
championships.
Â
In the last two years Lehigh has
crowned a national champion, placed four wrestlers in the NCAA finals and had
seven All-Americans. Senior Robert Hamlin, a 2011 finalist and two-time
All-American at 184 leads the Lehigh contingent. Hamlin enters the NCAA
Championships in 11th place on the schoolÂ’s career wins list. He will bid to
become LehighÂ’s 16th three-time All-American.
Â
The Mountain Hawks crowned three
individual champions at the EIWA tournament two weeks ago at Rutgers en route to
a fourth place team finish.
Â
Three of LehighÂ’s five NCAA
tournament entrants are seeded, with Hamlin and junior Joey Napoli seeded third
at 184 and 157 respectively, and sophomore Nathaniel Brown seeded ninth at
174.
Â
Freshman Randy Cruz will be the
first Mountain Hawk on the mats Thursday when he meets Brian Owen of Boise State
in the round of 32 at 133. Sophomore Anthony Salupo will follow shortly after
Cruz when he meets the No. 6 seed at 141, Ugi Khishignyam of the Citadel.
Â
EIWA Champion Joey Napoli will be
the first seeded Mountain Hawk to compete, as the third-seeded junior will face
Taylor Walsh of Indiana at 157 in a rematch of the Midlands semifinals, won by
Napoli, 5-3.
Â
Sophomore Nathaniel Brown, the
EIWA Champion at 174 and No. 9 seed will open with Hunter Gamble of
Gardner-Webb, while Hamlin, the No. 3 seed at 184 will open with Casey Newburg
of Kent State in a rematch of last yearÂ’s round of 32 won by Hamlin
10-2.
Â
Lehigh has the fifth most NCAA
Champions (27) and the eighth most All-Americans (135) of all Division I
wrestling programs. The Brown and White have never won the NCAA Team
Championship, coming as close as second in 1939, third in 1965, 1979 and a tie
for third in 2004.
Â
Penn State has won the last two
team titles and the Nittany Lions will be challenged by Oklahoma State, Iowa and
Minnesota among others.
Â
The 83rd NCAA Championships get
underway Thursday at 11 a.m. CDT from Wells Fargo Arena. The opening round will
feature pigtail rounds and preliminaries. Free live audio coverage of all of
LehighÂ’s NCAA Tournament action can be heard at Lehighsports.com.
