COLUMBUS, Ohio – In continued Big Ten Conference action, the Ohio State wrestling team will host Minnesota Friday in a clash of Top 5 teams. The Buckeyes, ranked fifth in the latest USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll and the No. 3 Gophers will wrestle at 7 p.m.

 

The Scarlet and Gray enter the match with a 7-1 overall record, including a 1-1 ledger in the league, which is good for fifth place. Dropping its Big Ten opener at No. 5 Iowa, 22-9, Jan. 4, Ohio State rebounded with a 33-6 win at No. 15 Northwestern Jan. 6. Minnesota, with a 2-0 record, currently is second in the Big Ten, beating Nebraska, 27-7, in November and handing Northwestern a 33-7 loss in early December.

 

Re-live the Action

The match Friday, with former Buckeye J.D. Bergman on the call, will re-air on BTN at 4 p.m. ET Jan. 14.

 

Time Changes

The match vs. Penn State Feb. 10 has been moved to 4 p.m., while the Buckeyes’ bout at Michigan Feb. 8 has a start time of 6 p.m. to accommodate for BTN coverage.

Friday is the Buckeyes’ centennial match as the Ohio State Department of Athletics is celebrating its 100th year as a department and membership in the Big Ten Conference. Tough Schedule

The Buckeyes have faced five Top 20 teams so far. Facing No. 12 Virginia Tech Nov. 16, Ohio State downed the Hokies, 23-10. Two days later, the Scarlet and Gray hosted No. 18 Pittsburgh and beat the Panthers, 26-13. No. 18 Maryland was up next, this time in New York at the inaugural Grapple at the Garden Dec. 16. The Buckeyes scored 34 points in the 34-3 win. Opening Big Ten action at No. 5 Iowa, Ohio State dropped a 22-9 decision Jan. 4, before answering with a 33-6 win at No. 15 Northwestern Jan. 6.

 

Stieber Fever

Logan and Hunter Stieber remain undefeated on the season with 15-0 and 20-0 records, respectively. The 133-pounder Logan Stieber did not wrestle last weekend at Iowa or Northwestern. Ninety-three percent of Logan Stieber’s wins in 2012-13 have been bonus point victories. With a 15-0 record, eight wins have been pins, four technical falls and two major decisions. En route to his 20 wins, which leads all starters, Hunter Stieber beat No. 8 Mark Ballweg of Iowa, 6-4, and Northwestern’s Pat Greco, 10-5.

 

Doing Work

A trio of Buckeyes in Hunter Stieber, Cam Tessari and Peter Capone went undefeated at Iowa and Northwestern Jan. 4 and Jan. 6. In addition to Stieber’s victories, Tessari beat Iowa’s Michael Kelly, 8-7, and Northwestern’s Dylan Marriott, 8-3. Capone scored an impressive win over No. 4 and Hawkeye Bobby Telford, 3-2tb, while winning via forfeit at Northwestern.

 

Moving Up

With his seventh fall of the season vs. Northwestern’s and 15th-ranked Dominick Malone Jan. 6, senior Nikko Triggas moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Ohio State records book for career falls with 44.

 

Stat Leaders

Hunter Stieber leads the Buckeyes in major decisions with eight, while his older brother, Logan, paces the squad in technical falls with four. Logan also owns the team lead in pins with eight with his fastest coming at a time of 39 seconds.

Of his team-leading 20 wins among starters, Hunter Stieber’s seven dual victories are a tie for the team lead with Peter Capone.

 

Open Tournament Success

Freshman heavyweight Nick Tavanello is having success on the open tournament circuit. The Buckeye from Wadsworth, Ohio, has claimed four titles – Michigan State Open, Harris Open, Cleveland State Open and Storm Open – while also finishing third at the UB Invitational in early November.

 

Most recently, Randy Languis (141 pounds) and Ian Paddock (149 pounds) joined Tavanello in winning titles at the Storm Open. Teammate Kosta Karageorge was the runner-up in the heavyweight division, while Matthew O’Hara (174 pounds) finished fifth and Jarrod Boone (149 pounds) and Mike Manuche (133 pounds) were sixth. 

 

Buckeyes vs. Gophers

Ohio State trails Minnesota, 33-14-2, in the all-time series. Last season, the Buckeyes dropped a 24-13 decision in Minneapolis. The Scarlet and Gray last won vs. Minnesota almost exactly three years ago to the day – Jan. 10, 2010 – a 26-12 victory at the National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

 

Up Next

Ohio State will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a 7 p.m. matchup vs. Indiana Jan. 18. Two days later, the Buckeyes will host Wisconsin at 2 p.m. in St. John Arena.
