Lehigh hits the road to face EIWA rivals Navy and American
Posted: 01/10/2013 |
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh looks to snap a three-dual
losing streak as the Mountain Hawks take to the road for a pair of
EIWA duals. The Mountain Hawks will meet Navy for the 93rd time
Saturday in Annapolis, Md., before trekking to Washington, D.C. to
face American on Sunday. Lehigh opened the 2013 portion of its
schedule with a 20-13 loss to Cornell on Sunday. The Mountain
Hawks won four matches, highlighted by Robert Hamlin’s 3-1, sudden
victory win over defending national champion Steve Bosak at 184.
The loss dropped
Lehigh out of the top 25 in the national dual meet rankings for
the first time since the 2008-09 preseason poll. The Mountain
Hawks have never lost four consecutive duals under Pat Santoro,
as Lehigh will look to avoid its first four dual skid since
December 2007.
Four Mountain Hawks
are ranked in the latest Amateur Wrestling News rankings, led by
Hamlin, and junior Joey Napoli who are both ranked third at 184
and 157 respectively. Sophomore Nathaniel Brown jumped into the
top 20 with his runner-up showing at the Midlands Championships.
Sophomore Anthony Salupo remains ranked at 141 despite not
competing versus Cornell. Hamlin, Napoli and Brown are also
ranked by InterMat, along with senior Shane Welsh who is ranked
20th.
Navy hosts its first
dual meet of the season Saturday when the Midshipmen welcome
Lehigh to Alumni Hall. The Mids have been busy on the tournament
circuit, hosting the Navy Classic in November and competing at
the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and Southern Scuffle,
among other events. Navy finished 12th out of 25 teams at the
Southern Scuffle and crowned two champions in Patrick Prada
(125) and Paul Rands (197) at the Franklin & Marshall Open
last weekend. The Mids probable lineup features three ranked
wrestlers in Bobby Barnhisel (No. 13 at 157), Mat Miller (No. 14
at 174) and Mason Bailey (No. 20 at 285). Bruce Burnett is in
his 13th season as Navy’s head coach. The Midshipmen are 1-0 in
duals this season, downing George Mason 33-4 on December 8.
American will close
out a busy weekend of action when they host Lehigh Sunday
afternoon. American will host Harvard Friday night before taking
on Stanford and the Mountain Hawks on Sunday. The Eagles
finished 15th at the Southern Scuffle and are 1-2 in duals with
a win over George Mason and losses to Maryland and Old Dominion.
Freshman David Terao was American’s lone place winner at the
Southern Scuffle, finishing eighth at 125. The Eagles have no
wrestlers ranked by Amateur Wrestling News, but have several men
ranked in the top six in the EIWA. Senior Kevin Tao is a
returning EIWA finalist at 149, while freshman Esteban
Gomez-Rivera (133) and junior Blake Herrin (285) are ranked
within the conference as well. Teague Moore is in his second
season as head coach of the Eagles.
Navy is Lehigh’s
second most-often wrestled opponent behind Penn State. The
Mountain Hawks are wrestling the Mids in a dual for the 62nd
straight year. Lehigh has won 14 of the last 16 duals against
Navy but dropped a 19-15 decision in its last visit to
Annapolis. The Mountain Hawks are 4-0 all-time versus American.
Action begins
Saturday when Lehigh meets Navy at 2 p.m. inside Alumni Hall.
The Mountain Hawks and Eagles will do battle on Sunday, also at
2 p.m., at Bender Arena. Live audio of both duals will be
available at Lehighsports.com, while the American match can also
be heard on WLVR-FM (91.3) with pre-match coverage beginning at
1:45.
