Recap, Updated Brackets, Photos, and Video Interview with No. 1 Ryan Flores: http://aueagles.com/sports/m-wrestl/2011-12/releases/20120315b
No. 1 Ryan Flores and No. 5 Ganbayar Sanjaa both advanced to the quarterfinal round with second-round wins on Thursday night at the NCAA Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Flores, the top-ranked heavyweight, continued his impressive performance with his third fall in as many matches on Thursday, pinning Eastern Michigan's Wesley Schroeder in his second-round bout. His three pins on Thursday -- which came in the pigtail round, the first round, and the second round -- make him the lone wrestler in the tournament with three pins on the first day. His three falls came in a combined 12:20 and the national runner-up from last year is now 20-0 on the season with 16 pins.
Sanjaa won his second straight match at 157 lbs. with a tight 3-2 decision over No. 12 Steven Monk of North Dakota State. Riding time proved to be the difference as Sanjaa and Monk were leveled at two through regulation, but Sanjaa's one-point for riding time gave him the victory. This marks the second straight quarterfinal appearance for Sanjaa, a returning All-American.
Kevin Tao (149 lbs.) and Daniel Mitchell (197 lbs.) both remain alive in the tournament in the consolation bracket. Tao dropped his second round bout to Oklahoma's Nick Lester while Mitchell earned a 4-1 decision over James Fox of Harvard. No. 11 Matt Mariacher was eliminated from the tournament after losing a 4-3 decision to Penn's Zack Kemmerer, wrapping up his career with 93 victories.
As a team, the Eagles remained in 13th place, the same spot they occupied to start Session 2. AU has 15.0 points and Penn State leads the team race with 38.5 points.
The action will continue on Friday morning at 11 a.m. ET with Session 3, which consists of the quarterfinals and more wrestleback action. No. 11 Matt Mariacher – 141
Mariacher, the 11-seed in the bracket, was eliminated on Thursday night with a 4-3 defeat to Zack Kemmerer of Penn. Kemmerer took a 2-0 lead through one period on a takedown, and the two wrestlers traded escapes to begin the second and third periods to give Kemmerer a 3-1 advantage. Facing a large riding-time deficit, Mariacher recorded the takedown just before the end of regulation, but Kemmerer's riding-time point gave him the 4-3 win. Mariacher ends his career with a 93-43 record at American, good for the sixth-most wins in program history.Â
Kevin Tao – 149
Tao dropped a 16-0 technical fall in the second round to Oklahoma's
Nick Lester. Tao fell behind, 5-0, through one period on a Lester
takedown and three-point near-fall and Lester continued to extend the
lead in the second period with a reversal and a takedown. Lester
eventually ended the bout in the third period with a technical fall. Tao
will face No. 10 Cam Tessari of Ohio State in the wrestlebacks on
Friday morning.
No. 5 Ganbayar Sanjaa – 157
Sanjaa advanced to the quarterfinals for the second straight year with a
3-2 victory over No. 12 Steven Monk of North Dakota State. Sanjaa took a
2-1 lead through one period and rode Monk for the majority of the
second period to build up a large advantage. Monk earned an escape to
begin the third but riding time proved to be the difference in Sanjaa's
win. Sanjaa will wrestle Princeton's Daniel Kolodzik in the
quarterfinals on Friday.
Daniel Mitchell – 197
Mitchell earned a hard-fought 4-1 decision in the wrestlebacks over
Harvard's James Fox. After a scoreless opening period, Fox rode Mitchell
the entire second period as the score remained tied but Fox opened up a
large riding-time advantage. Fox registered an escape to begin the
third period to take the 1-0 lead but Mitchell quickly responded to take
the 2-1 lead. Mitchell was able to ride Fox the majority of the period
and registered a near-fall at the end of regulation to close the match.
Mitchell will face A.J. Kissel of Purdue in the wrestlebacks Friday
morning.
Ryan Flores – HWT
Flores registered his third straight pin on Thursday, making short work
of Eastern Michigan's Wesley Schroeder to move on to the quarterfinals
for the second year in a row. Flores jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a
takedown and added a two-point near-fall to make it 4-0. Quickly after,
Flores recorded the fall, his 16th of the season as he remained
undefeated on the season. He will take on Andrew Delaney of The Citadel
in Friday's quarters.
