Top 10 High School Matches Of The Year
The hardest part of writing an article of this nature is having to pare down to just 10.  There's a pile of quality matches that won't make this list.  Like all the previous top 10's before it, these reflect my opinion and what I enjoy.  Some like 2-Pac, others Biggie.  I liked Raimo/Thomsen, Willie likes Fix v. Suriano.  Personal preference here.

I'm considering basically all matches for all styles from October through Fargo in July.

To the list:

10.  Alex Marinelli v. Mason Manville - Ironman Finals
Manville had tons of momentum coming into this bout.  A Cadet World champ who was undefeated heading into the season, Manville was a favorite in the eyes of many.  Marinelli and Manville are as physical as any two wrestlers at the high school level.  The pace was high as was the technical ability of each.

9. Chad Red v. Luke Pletcher - FloNationals Finals
Two of the best light weight seniors this year collided for a FloNationals classic.  I though Plether looked as goos as I'd seen him all year.  Red's arsenal was always the x-factor and he made it happen with a filthy cradle to secure the win.

8. Dylan Wisman v. Owen Webster - Fargo Semi's
Alright, let's get a little VA flava up in here.  Webster v. Wisman is one of countless examples of why the new Freestyle rules are so good.  This one was 10-8 Webster at the break and ended 16-12.

7. Daton Fix v. Nick Suriano - Who's #1

Certainly the drama of this one wasn't lost on me.  The longest high school match in history between two competitors.  The flurries were high level, albeit fruitless in terms of points.  However, seeing the level of determination where really neither guy budged at any point in time was mind blowing.  30 some minutes in and nobody broke.  Came away with emmense respect for each.

6. Chad Red v. Kanen Storr - FloNationals Semi's
Ok, from 6 on, these could all be number one.  This one blew my mind honestly.  I thought both of these guys wrestled so hard, and created so many scoring opportunities for themselves.  It really had it all for a Folkstyle match.  Storr isn't as household of a name as Red at this point but watch this match and try tell me he's very far off.  Lots of points for a Folkstyle match with a buzzer beater TD.  Can't beat it!

5. Owen Webster v. Keegan Moore - Match #2 At Cadet Trials
I feel like this entire series was completely forgotten by much of the wrestling community.  Largely due to the tremendous shadow cast by the Fix/Lee novella at Cadet Trials.  Not only was this entire series fantastic this match was outstanding as well with a late takedown winning the match for Webster.

4. Gavin Teasdale v. Jaret Lane - Pennsylvania State Quarters
Everything was going to plan for Gavin.  As the #2 ranked guy in the nation, he was supposed to just take care of business and earn state title #1 as a Freshman.  Jaret Lane came oh-so-close to preventing that with a NASTY headlock that nearly pinned Gavin. Gavin was able to pull off the comeback win and take the title.

3. Alex Thomsen v. Nick Raimo - Fargo Finals
Came away extremely impressed with both guys.  It was the one people couldn't stop talking about post-Fargo.  Raimo's throw may have been the move that stuck with me the most for the whole tournament.  This match also was a fine example of the new Freestyle rules producing high scores as this one ended 14-13!

2. Daton Fix v. Spencer Lee - Match 1 of Cadet Trials
It lived up to the hype in every way.  Then the post-match discussions were tremendous.  Spencer proved to have the better leg attacks and offense, but Daton found ways to win despite trailing 5-0 at the break.  You don't see quick turnarounds like that in matches without pins.  Everything was according to plan.  All Spencer, then POW with 40 seconds to go Daton sprints across the line for a 5-5 win and somehow was able to defend from tripod for a solid 15 seconds.  I've never seen anything like it.  Probably many of you will want it at #1, but I'll never give Willie the satisfaction of having a match that came down to criteria at #1!

1. Evan Wick v. Hayden Hidlay - Fargo Round 4
I have personal affinity's towards matches I got to call as well.  I found this to be another match that was incredibly under the radar at Fargo.  Hidlay was coming off a Greco title and looked fantastic in the first period nearly (and perhaps should have) getting the tech early.  Wick mounts his comeback powered by some clean leg attacks.  I don't have anything against top scores in freestyle, but I'll point out that it's rare to see a comeback of this nature without a series of turns.  I think that's what sets this match apart.

Honorable Mention:
Daton Fix v. Yianni D - FloNationals
Keegan Moore v. Jaydin Clayton - FloNationals
Sammy Sasso v. Alex Lloyd - Fargo
Myles Martin v. Zahid Valencia - Whos #1
Matthew Kolodzik v. Davion Jeffries Geary Invitational
Kamal Bey v. Beau Breske - Fargo Greco Quarters
Austin Gomez v. Jack Mueller - Fargo
Matthew Kolodzik v. Keegan Moore - Fargo
