FloWrestler of the Week: Roman Bravo-Young, Arizona
FloWrestler of the Week: Roman Bravo-Young, Arizona
Winning one stop sign is hard enough, and winning two is even harder. So imagine doing that on back-to-back years.
For Roman Bravo-Young it was just another day in Fargo as he collected his third and fourth Cadet titles. The future Who’s No. 1 competitor put on a great performance in both Freestyle and Greco. He avenged his loss at Junior Duals in the Greco finals as he edged Peyton Robb of Minnesota 8-6. He also beat Oklahoma’s Jet Taylor and Brock Bergelin of Wisconsin en route to his second straight Greco title.
As if his performance during the Greco tournament wasn’t impressive enough, he topped it when he showed some pretty savvy defense in the Freestyle finals to beat Matty Parker of Pennsylvania, 11-4.
But the bout that proved he was the real deal was his incredible comeback victory over Andrew Alirez of Colorado when he scored 18 unanswered points in the second period to get the 18-7 technical fall which propelled him to the semis where he shutout New Jersey’s Carmen Ferrante 10-0 before defeating Parker in the finals.
His incredible resiliency and unshaken performance in both tournaments makes Roman Bravo-Young the FloWrestler of the Week.
Other FloWrestler of the Week Nominees:
Holmes’ pick: Nick Raimo, New Jersey
In his first trip to Fargo, Raimo wowed the crowd with high-flying throws as he captured both the Cadet Freestyle and Greco titles. Though he is admittedly more of a Greco guy, he claimed the Freestyle title and gave us one of the sickest four-pointers of the week against Alex Thomsen in the finals.
Was barely even tested as he won titles in both styles. He finished his matches quickly and was on and off the mat before his opponents knew what him hit. After claiming his Freestyle title he admitted that defending his top-ranking was the number one factor he was motivated by to dispose of each guy quickly.
Willie’s pick: Nick Reenan, Texas
Even though it wasn’t easy, he took home titles in Freestyle and Greco. His Greco title wasn’t much of a competition as he teched everyone in the first period pretty quickly. However, he got all he could handle in the Freestyle final against future Mizzou Tiger Dylan Wisman. It was all about Reenan in the beginning, but the tide turned quickly as Wisman mounted a comeback that Reenan had to fend off until recording the 10-6 win.
CP’s pick: Jo Jo Smith, Oklahoma
Completely blanked the competition on his way to claiming his first Junior National freestyle title. He combined to score 72 points while not giving up any. His sheer dominance earned him the OW Award as he eight team points to assist in Oklahoma’s team title run.
