Emilio Ysaguirre was the centerpiece of our recent documentary - The Eloy Boys. This documentary focused on a rambunctious group of high school wrestlers who eat, sleep, play, train, and all live in the small desert town of Eloy, AZ. Now, Ysaguirre has begun his college career at Arizona State University and has a bright future ahead of him. Check out the below article breaking down why Sun Devil fans should be excited about Emilio Ysaguirre.

Emilio Ysaguirre’s High School Accomplishments

Emilio Ysaguirre finished high school as the #28 recruit out of the class of 2022. Ysaguirre jumped onto most high school wrestling fans’ radars when he defeated Jordan Titus at the 2020 Super 32 just weeks after Titus competed at Who’s Number One. Then he was a runner-up at the 2021 Fargo Nationals in the Junior 132-pound division. Ysaguirre made the Fargo finals by defeating current Ohio State wrestler Nic Bouzakis (currently ranked #8 at 133 pounds).

Ysaguirre closed out his high school career by placing third at the U20 world team trials where he lost only to Jesse Mendez while recording wins over Carter Bailey, Dylan Chappel, and Dean Peterson. Bailey, Chappel, and Peterson are notably all currently ranked or have been ranked in the top 24 of our NCAA Rankings.

Emilio Ysaguirre’s Freshman Year At Arizona State

Ysaguirre wrestled his first year of college wrestling last season for Arizona State at 141 pounds and showed flashes of his potential for the Sun Devils. Originally, Ysaguirre was planning on redshirting for the full year behind starter Jesse Vasquez. However, after Vasquez went down with an injury, Ysaguirre came out of redshirt to become Arizona State’s starter at 141 pounds.

Ysaguirre started his collegiate career at the Keystone Classic in November where he made the semi-finals by defeating Dominic Hargrove and Joseph Cangro. He then dropped 3 matches to finish 6th in his first college open. Ysaguirre didn’t wrestle again until the Edinboro Open where he went 2-2 but failed to place.

The highlight of Ysaguirre’s season came when he defeated Brock Hardy in Arizona State’s Dual against Nebraska, 10-5. Hardy would go on to finish 6th at the NCAA Tournament and is currently ranked #5 in our pre-season NCAA rankings. Ultimately, Ysaguirre missed qualifying for the NCAA tournament by 1 match after placing second at the 2023 Pac-12 Tournament. Despite coming up short in the post-season, Ysaguirre proved he’s capable of contending for All-American honors and will be a centerpiece of the Sun Devils starting lineup for years to come.
