Team Scores and All the Title Chase Developments Ohio State wins their first ever NCAA Championship in wrestling, becoming just the ninth school to take top honors in Division I history. In one of the most cloudy, and thus, anticipated, team races in recent memory. The much heralded Buckeye freshmen lived up to expectations with three Top 3 finishes to compliment their legendary leader, Logan Stieber, who became just the fourth wrestler to win four individual titles. The 5th, perhaps most improbable and equally important Buckeye All Ame...

NCAA Darkhorse Selections!

Writing the darkhorses article is always one of my favorite pre-NCAA pieces of writing. Guys can be darkhorses for very different reasons and with very different expectations. If I have an unseeded guy on going to place that’s a darkhorse performance. If you’re a 6-10 seed and I think you can win/make the finals/place top 4 that’s a darkhorse performance. Disclaimer: I’m not going to include guys like Delgado, Schopp, Kindig, Hunter Stieber, Brascetta. They are great, and that’s documented. Their lack of or low see...

Expert Picks - 2015 NCAA Championships

Brackets have been poured over. A season's worth of data analyzed. And now it's time to call 'em like we see 'em. The crazy thing about wrestling (and part of what makes the NCAA Tournament so compelling), is that 'right now' means everything. Perhaps in no other sport do you have to be clicking on all cylinders to be the commodity we know you to be. Wrestlers will underperform. Book it. And others will reach heights we've never seen them hit before, leaving us with a 'where'd that come from' look on our faces. Despite all the data available a...

Who Peaks Best?

By Ben Askren Peaking at the right time has been something that my life has focused around for the last 15 or so years. It is a very interesting concept and there are lots of theories on how to peak an athlete correctly. My general thought is to have a well thought out training plan combined with a competition schedule that will have an athlete battle tested. So going into NCAAs I wanted to do a statistical analysis of which team peaks the best. Here is how I did it: I picked 6 teams to test- Penn St, Iowa, Minnesota, Cornell, Oklahoma St and m...

Fi: The Ultimate NCAA Preview

The nitty gritty details of the tournament, the early matches, the round 2 wrestlebacks, there are going to be massive ramifications within many of these scenarios. I’m going to opine not only about how I see many of these matches going, but also the minute situations that will have major impact on the team race. 125 Early Round Drama: A few matches to have your eye on are the Terao/Peters match as well as the Delgado/Cox match. I don’t see a high probability for major upsets apart from there. I do like Moisey to take out Tolbert in...
