The Rutgers wrestling team has seen a spike in the number of season tickets sold for its upcoming slate of home matches.
ScarletKnights.com reports that Rutgers has, in fact, surpassed its initial goal of 1,200 season tickets sold for 2017-18. Every season ticket past the 1,200 mark comes with an added bonus: An unnamed donor will contribute $125 per season ticket sold to the Sam Cali Foundation. Cali was a sophomore at Rutgers before tragically passing away in car wreck in the summer of 2016.
Rutgers was fifth in average attendance in all of NCAA wrestling last season, with an average of 4,706 coming to College Avenue Gym or the Rutgers Athletic Center to see home matches. If 2016-17's numbers are an indication, Rutgers' 2,000 season ticket mark is enough to keep the Scarlet Knights as high as eighth in the national attendance rankings just on season tickets alone. Without the help of any walk-up sales, RU would already be sitting somewhere around 16th nationally looking at last year's numbers.
With the official news of No. 3-ranked Nick Suriano transferring in from Penn State, there is little doubt that the season ticket sales goals will be met this year on the banks of the Raritan.
