Wrestling Transplants At The 2017 World Championships

Many high level wrestlers transfer from one country to another. We've compiled a list of those that will be wrestling at the 2017 UWW Senior Men's Freestyle World Championship in Paris.

With the UWW men's freestyle world championships right around the corner, it's time to look at the international transfers entered in the field. In total, there are 32 transfers competing in Paris on August 21-26. We're breaking them down by where they transferred from and by their current country as well as adding relevant information such as their biggest placements and wins.

For reference, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, the Tuva Republic, and the Sakha Republic are all part of Russia. We will consider South Ossetia as a separate entity, despite the ongoing feud between Georgia and Russia as to its official status. South Ossetia is listed as South Ossetia and not associated with either Russia or Georgia.

In one special case, Georgi Ketoev (ARM), is classified as North Ossetian, even though he was born in Tbilsi, Georgia, in 1986, which at the time was still part of the of the U.S.S.R. Ketoev is of Ossetian descent, and he lived and trained in North Ossetia while competing for Russia up until 2013.

Of the 32 transfers, there are 12 ranked guys and 18 world or Olympic medals. Of the transfers, Russia accounts 21 of them. Georgia has four, and the United States and Ukraine contribute another three each. South Ossetia, Cuba, Moldova, and France make up for the remaining transfers with one each.
