Time Capsule: When Jordan Burroughs Won His First World Title

Time Capsule: When Jordan Burroughs Won His First World Title

As Jordan Burroughs, the new self-proclaimed team Dad of this year's Senior Freestyle World Team, said on Twitter, he is the only one on the team who is married and/or has kids.

In response to Burroughs, Xander Schultz hilariously depicted the "team dad" dynamic of this year's team.

And to further show the age gap between Burroughs and his new teammates, let's take a trip back to 2011 when Burroughs was a World Team rookie and had just won his first World title.

2011 Freestyle World Team
Nick Simmons (55kg)
Reece Humphrey (60kg)
Teyon Ware (66kg)
Jordan Burroughs (74kg)
Cael Sanderson (84kg)
Jake Varner (96kg)
Tervel Dlagnev (120kg)

Watch Burroughs win his first world title over Sadegh Goudarzi (IRI).

nullIn 2011, the Green Bay Packers were the Super Bowl XLV champs, the St. Louis Cardinals had just won the World Series, the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 was Adele's Someone Like You (literally the day Burroughs won his title), and the FloWrestling site looked like this (pictured right).

Crazy right?!

Now let's go weight-by-weight and see what the rest of the team was up to that same year.

57kg: Thomas Gilman
In 2011, Gilman won a Fargo Junior title over a pretty impressive field that included his future teammate Cory Clark, Jered Cortez now of Penn State and David Terao, who he beat in the finals, at 119-pounds.

61kg: Logan Stieber
This was a controversial time for Stieber. As we all remember, this was the year of the takedown that wasn't as a then freshman defeated Jordan Oliver in the NCAA finals to pick up his first of what would become four titles.

65kg: Zain Retherford
At this point, the Zain Train was more of the little engine that could. As just a sophomore in high school, Retherford had just claimed his first PIAA state title in 2011 at 103-pounds.

70kg: James Green
He was Nebraska-bound and gearing up to become JB's partner. But before then Green was finishing off his undefeated senior season of high school with a win in the New Jersey state finals at 145-pounds over Paramus' Nick Alpher. He also won NHSCAs too.

Watch Green's state semifinal win here.

86kg: J'Den Cox
This was when Cox and his World Team counterpart Kyle Snyder met in the Cadet tournament in Fargo with Snyder winning (1-0,1-1). Ultimately, Cox wrestled back to place third at 215.

96kg: Kyle Snyder
I've already mentioned that this was the year Snyder defeated J'Den in Fargo. But that's not the only thing he was winning at the time. Snyder had just finished his freshman season in high school at Good Counsel winning his first National Prep title.

125kg: Nick Gwiazdowski
Gwiaz, like Green, had just won a NHSCA Senior National title and was getting ready to head off to Binghamton for his true freshman year where he finished as an All-American.

Watch Gwiaz get a fall over Jace Bennett back in 2011.
