We Never Thought J'den Cox vs David Taylor Would Be Possible
We never thought J'den Cox versus David Taylor would be possible at the 2017 World Team Trials in Lincoln, NE, on Saturday.
Fifty pounds. Just three years ago, that's how much weight separated David Taylor and J'den Cox. On Saturday, June 10th they'll tip the scales at about the exact same weight at the World Team Trials in Lincoln, NE. This could be the only time we see this match, ever.
In March 2014, Taylor capped off his second undefeated season with another NCAA title that would also earn him his second Hodge Trophy at 165 pounds. At that same NCAAs, we saw the emergence of the next college star when true freshman J'den Cox won a title at 197 pounds.
DT's title at 165 in 2014:
J'den's true freshman title at 197 in 2014:
This isn't their biggest weight disparity, however. In June 2014, the two weighed in at 213 pounds (97kg) and 163 pounds (74kg). J'den would fail to place top four in the challenge tournament. David would reach the finals, only to fall to Jordan Burroughs in two straight.
If you had told anyone that in just three years these two would be competing for a world team spot at the same weight, there's not many people who would have believed you. With J'den's ability to cut down to 86kg, combined with David Taylor's desire to move up to a more comfortable weight class, we see the two converging as the dominant presences at 86.
Not only does this match provide incredible star power and entertainment value, but this is also likely the only chance people will have to watch these two legends scrap. It is widely assumed that UWW will switch to 10 weights for next year. This would likely put Taylor at 85kg and Cox up at 90.
Knowing these facts, it's tough to pass up this potentially once-in-a-lifetime matchup. The two will collide on Saturday evening, provided Taylor navigates his way through the challenge brackets.
