Russian freestyle wrestling national champion Alexander Bogomoev is in intensive care following a brawl on Sunday in Ust-Ordynsky, a village in Siberia.

As reported by Russian news website L!FE, the altercation began between Bogomoev's coach, Bair Ilyin, and a deputy of the regional Duma (a local governing body), Anton Asalhanov. Bogomoev suffered a ruptured spleen after being beaten with a pipe. Bogomoev is currently being treated for his injuries in a hospital, where doctors give him a favorable prognosis for recovery.

Bogomoev is a multiple-time Russian National champion. He also won the 2015 European Championships and the prestigious Yarygin Tournament in 2015 and 2016. Bogomoev was competing in the 61kg weight division before dropping down to 57kg in 2016. Within Russia, Bogomoev competes for his home state, the Republic of Buryatia.

The incident is being investigated by Russian authorities. One English language source, Crime Russia, reported that alcohol, knives, and axes were all involved.

Russian freestyle head coach Dzambolat Tedeev said, "As I heard, Sasha [Alexander Bogomoev] has already come to his senses, crisis averted. I hope he gets out of trouble soon."

Our thoughts are with Bogomoev, and we all wish him a speedy recovery back to full health.
