Pac-12 2017 Conference Tournament Preview and Predictions
The Pac-12 gets a jump start on the postseason, hosting their conference tournament a week before the other seven conferences. It's all going down this Sunday in the Maples Pavilion in Stanford, California. Go to Pac-12.com to stream the earlier rounds and tune into to the Pac-12 Network starting at 6:00 PM PT (9:00 PM ET) for the televised finals.

Of the six programs that wrestle in the Pac-12, only two make into the Flo Tournament Rankings: the #13 Arizona State Sun Devils and the #17 Stanford Cardinal. Oregon State, CSU Bakersfield, Boise State and Cal Poly round out the sextet.

FLO INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS

Below is a chart of all the ranked Pac-12 wrestlers by weight class:

null

Arizona State's 174 Zahid Valencia leads the conference, as the only #1 ranked grappler in the Pac-12, although Stanford's Joey McKenna is not far behind at #3 at 141.

184 is the only weight in the conference without a ranked wrestler, while 285 has the most with three top 20 competitors.

NCAA COACHES POLL AND RPI RANKING

The latest coaches poll and RPI rankings, published by the NCAA, were just released to the public. The ranked Pac-12 wrestlers can be found the chart below, with the Coaches Poll ranking first, followed by the RPI ranking:

WEIGHT CLASS PREDICTIONS

Because we're gluttons for punishment, we will predict all six placements before the tournament is even seeded. The number of NCAA Tournament automatic qualifiers up for grabs is in parenthesis after each weight class.

125 (1)
  1. Townsell, Stanford
  2. Calkins, Oregon State
  3. Nickell, CSU Bakersfield
  4. Kramer, Arizona State
  5. Bardezbain, Boise State
  6. Blackburn, Cal Poly
#12 Townsell is a strong favorite to win the 125 crown. Also expect a fierce semifinal battle between the unranked Calkins and Nickell.

133 (1)
  1. Schram, Stanford
  2. Palmer, Oregon State
  3. Herrera, CSU Bakersfield
  4. Rico, Arizona State
  5. Cook, Boise State
  6. Funakoshi, Cal Poly
Palmer is right on the top 20 bubble, so an upset of #14 Schram is not out of the question.

141 (3)
  1. McKenna, Stanford
  2. Rohlfing, CSU Bakersfield
  3. Hathaway, Oregon State
  4. Villarreal, Arizona State
  5. Pollock, Cal Poly
  6. Haddadin, Boise State
141 is the third weight class in a row of nearly identical predicted finishes. #3 McKenna should romp over everyone, but Rohlfing and Hathaway should be a doozy in the semis.

149 (3)
  1. Delgado, Oregon State
  2. Hammond, CSU Bakersfield
  3. Maruca, Arizona State
  4. Dempsey, Stanford
  5. Wall, Boise State
  6. Cortez, Cal Poly
Arizona State finally starts getting to some of their big guns with Maruca. CSU Bakersfield and Oregon State also have viable contenders with Hammond, and #20 Delgado, respectively.

157 (2)
  1. Shields, Arizona State
  2. Green, Boise State
  3. Shorts, Cal Poly
  4. Fox, Stanford
  5. Rodriquez Oregon State
  6. Thalin, CSU Bakersfield
A deep weight class for the Pac-12 but with only two AQs. Four NCAA caliber wrestlers in #14 Shields, Green, Shorts and Fox will duke it out for one of the coveted trips to the big dance.

165 (2)
  1. Valencia, Arizona State
  2. De La Riva, CSU Bakersfield
  3. Subjeck, Stanford
  4. Kastl, Cal Poly
  5. Romero, Boise State
  6. Dobler, Oregon State
A mere two AQs in another deep weight class. Unfortunately for the other NCAA hopefuls,  #9 Valencia is a clear favorite and #19 De La Riva has separated himself from the rest of the pack.

174 (2)
  1. Valencia, Arizona State
  2. Galli, Stanford
  3. Wilhelm, Cal Poly
  4. Dewey, Boise State
  5. Penyacsek, CSU Bakersfield
  6. Coleman, Oregon State
#1 Valencia is undefeated on the year and is the biggest favorite at the tournament. #19 Galli will try and keep it interesting but this weight class should be all Zahid's.

184 (1)
  1. Petersen, Arizona State
  2. McLeod, Oregon State
  3. Movahedi, Cal Poly
  4. Battisto, CSU Bakersfield
  5. Del toro, Boise State
  6. Nevills, Stanford
This is the most wide open weight class in the conference, with no wrestlers making into any of the rankings. If Cal Poly wants to crash the finals party, this may be their best chance.

197 (3)
  1. Griego, Oregon State
  2. Marchok, Stanford
  3. Williams, CSU Bakersfield
  4. Lane, Cal Poly
  5. Harris, Arizona State
  6. DiLulo, Boise State
We've picked Greigo to win it over #19 Marchok in our very mild upset special of the tournament.

285 (3)
  1. Hall, Arizona State
  2. Butler, Stanford
  3. Crawford, Oregon State
  4. Empey, Cal Poly
  5. Gonzalez, Boise State
  6. Balmer, CSU Bakersfield
With three ranked wrestlers, #7 Hall, #13 Butler, and #19 Crawford, 285 is the strongest weight class in the Pac-12 this year. But with only three AQs, there is also no margin for error.

PREDICTED AQs

Arizona State: 6
Stanford: 6
Oregon State: 4
CSU Bakersfield: 4
Boise State: 1
Cal Poly: 0

FINAL TEAM STANDINGS

Using our picks and the 12, 10, 9 ,7, 6, 4  placement scoring rubric for 6 team tournaments (but ignoring advancement and bonus points), we get the following final standings:

null

Arizona State and Stanford are neck and neck, although Oregon State is expected to challenge. Those are also the only teams predicted to have Pac-12 Champions this year.

The winner could be determined by the heavyweight finals, which is as good an excuse as any to skip the Oscars. Enjoy the tournament, wrestling fans!
