Bo Jordan vs. Mark Hall Could Have Monster Implications
Penn State's Mark Hall versus Ohio State's Bo Jordan at 174 could not only prove to be one of the best matchup of the night, but it also has the capability to swing the dual in either team's favor on Friday.
Live This Week On Flo: Feb 1-3: Dave Schultz | Feb. 3: Oklahoma State at Edinboro | Feb. 3: Oklahoma at South Dakota State | Feb. 4: Air Force at Wyoming | Feb. 4: Utah Valley at SDSU | Feb. 4: Delbarton at Wyoming Seminary | Feb. 4: Edinboro Open
The storylines are boundless for the No. 2-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions' road trip to the Buckeye State this Friday for a dual with Big Ten rival and No. 3 Ohio State. Forget about the fact that Penn State and Ohio State have won the past six NCAA titles. Forget about the fact that there is more than likely going to be a rematch of the NCAA finals at 184. Forget about the fact that Olympic champion and Buckeyes junior Kyle Snyder will be in attendance and active, fresh off a win at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia. We've seen all of that. Penn State's Mark Hall versus Ohio State's Bo Jordan at 174 could not only prove to be one of the best matchup of the night, but it also has the capability to swing the dual in either team's favor.
The host Buckeyes line up pretty well against the Nittany Lions and could theoretically take five out of 10 matches. The story, however, of PSU's success since the Cael Sanderson regime started has been bonus points. This dual is no different. If PSU wants to escape Columbus with its No. 2 ranking intact, it will need bonus points from its studs.
In what could be the momentum-shifting weight in the dual, Jordan owns the No. 1 ranking but has been plagued by injuries for most the 2016-17 season. Hall has been spotty, winning the Southern Scuffle in impressive fashion in early January but falling to No. 10 Alex Meyer the night that Sanderson pulled his redshirt off. If Hall completes the upset, the implications on rankings and conference seeding become really interesting. If Jordan wins, while it will not be an upset, it could give the Buckeyes enough momentum to pull off upsets in the next two weight classes.
Technically the matchup is perfect. I've heralded Hall as a technical innovator in the sport, and Penn State staff fosters that type of creativity. Jordan's baseline wrestling is enough to make any coach sleep like a baby. Hall's high-powered offense against Bo Jordan's stingy head and hands will be worth the price of admission on Friday.
