Yianni Diakomihalis is undergoing season-ending surgery to repair an injury to his left elbow. The Cornell commitment will miss the remainder of his senior year and an opportunity to win a fifth New York state title.

In December, Diakomihalis had surgery on a broken right elbow, and after further diagnosis, it was decided he will soon be having surgery on his left elbow. Diakomihalis said his growth plates were injured to a point that an operative procedure was necessary to get him back on the mat without extensive rehabilitation.

Despite the multiple surgeries, Diakomihalis is optimistic he will be back to full health soon enough and competing at his previous high level.

I feel like this isn't the end of the world. I needed to get this done eventually, so I'll be all right.

Diakomihalis entered his final season at Hilton High School, a Section V school just outside of Rochester, New York, as one of the most highly credentialed athletes in the class of 2017 after winning two UWW Cadet world titles as well as three Super 32 belts and a FloNationals crown. The No. 3 overall recruit on the Senior Big Board ends his career with the New York state record for consecutive wins and is just the seventh New York wrestler to win four state titles.

At this time, it appears Diakomihalis will be able to start wrestling again prior to UWW Junior Nationals in the final weekend of April. A timeline of eight to 10 weeks after his next surgery was given for him to be able to start wrestling live again, which would give him about a month to prepare for nationals.
