The tag team duo of Chad Gable and Jason Jordan, better known as American Alpha, made history when it captured the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at Allstate Arena in Chicago on Tuesday. The former college and Olympic wrestlers became the first team to win NXT tag team titles and hold WWE main roster belts in the same year.
Gable and Jordan previously won the NXT Tag Team Championship in the WWE's developmental promotion in April before being drafted to the main roster.
While the duo is referred to as American Alpha when it enters the squared circle, Gable and Jordan were once also mainstays in the amateur wrestling world. Jordan was born Nathan Everhart in Tinley Park, Illinois, just 44 miles south of Allstate Arena. He was a three-sport athlete in high school and passed up a professional baseball deal to wrestle at the University of Indiana, where he was a three-time national qualifier and was ranked as high as second in the nation.
Gable went by Chas Betts when he competed on a wrestling mat and won a Minnesota state championship in high school. After high school, he chose to focus on Greco and attended the USOEC program at Northern Michigan University. Betts earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in 2012 by beating Jordan Holm in back-to-back matches in the OTT finals. Betts went on to qualify for the United States and compete in London.
