When questions arise on how to grow wrestling, money is always one of the key issues that is brought up. The general consensus is that we need more of it in the sport.

After United World Wrestling decided (abruptly) to add a World Championships for non-Olympic weights to the schedule, it left a lot of speculation surrounding the event unanswered. USA Wrestling's response was to put its money where its mouth is and develop a funding process for wresters heading to the new international tournament.

Who's Going?

The winner of the 55kg and 60kg in women's freestyle; 71kg and 80kg in Greco; and 61kg and 70kg in men's freestyle at the Bill Farrell Invitational in New York City on November 10-12.

Watch all the action at the Bill Farrell International LIVE on FloWrestling on November 10-12.

Where are they going?

The World Championships for non-Olympic weights will be held in Budapest, Hungary, on December 10-12.

How are they getting there?

UWW surprised a lot of people when it announced that it would be putting together a non-Olympic weight World Championships in an Olympic year. This poses a problem, because the U.S.'s Olympic effort Is sponsored in part by USAW and other non-profit organizations such as the Living The Dream Fund and USOC Operation Gold. When the bill for Rio came in… it wasn't cheap, leaving us scrambling to finance the non-Oly weights.

In an extended effort to support our top-level athletes, USAW will be funding a group of six athletes and their coaches to go to Hungary. The winners of the trials at each weight will be given a $1,000 monthly stipend for the year. The second- and third-place finishers at each weight will be awarded a one-time bonus of $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.

Medal Winners

Winning incentives have been laid out for our athletes, as well. A bronze medal will get you $6,000, and silver fetches $8,000. If you bring a gold medal back from Hungary, it'll come with a congratulatory $15,000 check.

Now that the financial parameters for the events have been set, keep an eye on Nomad's entry list to see if the money involved sways anymore of the nation's top talent to throw its hat into the ring.
