With current Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak recovering from a complex migraine, general manager John Elway announced Monday that former Wyoming All-American wrestler Joe DeCamillis would serve as the acting head coach for the Broncos' Thursday night game at the San Diego Chargers.
Denver's special teams coordinator, DeCamillis claimed All-American honors at Wyoming after finishing in eighth place at 1988 NCAA Tournament at 167 pounds. DeCamillis is also sixth in Wyoming wrestling history with 121 career victories. After graduation, DeCamillis stuck around Laramie, WY, to pursue a graduate degree and assist with the wrestling team. That was until the NFL called.
DeCamillis was dating, and eventually married, Dana Reeves, the daughter of then-Denver Broncos head coach Dan Reeves. The Broncos had a position open in their football administration department, and Reeves thought DeCamillis would be a perfect fit. As they say, the rest is history. DeCamillis has now been coaching in the NFL for 28 years with six different franchises and helped the Broncos win a Super Bowl last season.
"I think it will be a seamless transition," Elway said at a Monday press conference.
The Broncos currently sit at 4-1 and are tied with the Oakland Raiders atop the AFC West.
"Kubiak set a template for us," DeCamillis said at the press conference. "He does so many good things for us, and he lets a lot of our guys do their job to the utmost, anyway. So we don't see a big change this week, and we're just going to keep whatever we can do to win a game. That's the main thing."
