When Dylan Smith took the mat for Bishop Lynch, he was able to step up and deliver in extremely uncomfortable situations. Several years later, Smith is doing the same thing as an officer in the Dallas Police Department.
Smith was on duty the night of the Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas where five Dallas police officers were murdered. Roger Moore, a photographer whose story was featured in the Huffington Post, was taking pictures of the protest when shots rang out. He sought cover behind a vehicle alongside several police officers, including Smith.
Moore posted these pictures of Smith on his Facebook page.
Moore didn't know the name of the brave officer he was photographing and praising in the above Facebook post, but his identity as Bishop Lynch HS wrestler Dylan Smith was confirmed by Steve Silver. Steve was the father to Troy and Luke Silver, who wrestled at Bishop Lynch. Troy was teammates with Smith.
Steve Silver spoke of Smith’s dedication and selflessness during his time on the Bishop Lynch team.
“He did everything he was supposed to do and worked hard,” Silver said. “He got asked to do a lot of things a lot of the superstars wouldn’t have been asked to do.”
Among those things included wrestling at heavyweight. A weight class he was (obviously) undersized for. Smith never backed down from doing what was needed for his team, even if it meant bumping up into a situation he was unlikely to win.
Silver recalled one of Smith’s big moments, when he was an underdog in a dual against Easton.
“It came down to the heavyweight match, and he had to win for us to win,” he said “He was out classed and undersized. We were like “this poor kid has to go out there” He was feeling all this pressure and he won the match and we beat Easton. I didn’t think it was possible.”
Dylan Smith may not be the usual caliber of wrestler we feature on FloWrestling, but there’s no question he’s one of the bravest.
