Recruiting Season Is Open
Three American Olympic champions will be in the same room today. But not in a practice room. Not on a college campus or at a Regional Training Center. Not even at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Instead, they’ll be at Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, vying for the services of top prospect, Daton Fix.

Welcome to July 1, the first day college wrestling coaches can contact, and visit, the nation’s top talent heading into their senior year.

In the current recruiting environment, where top talents make commitments earlier than ever, recruiters' methods have increased urgency. Thirty-six of the Top 100, including six of the Top 10 on our Senior Big Board, have already committed. Overall, 45 seniors-to-be have committed to Division I wrestling programs.

Get Excited In...

...Annapolis - The Mids landed No. 21, Quentin Hovis, along with career 125-er Ian Timmons and two under-the-radar talents in Pennsylvania's Gus Solomon and Wyatt Long.

...Ann Arbor - Michigan typically recruits very well. But they failed to earn a top-20 recruiting class in 2016 for the first time in six years. They’re back on track with early commitments from four top-100 individuals.

...Columbia - Coach Brian Smith at Missouri landed three ranked recruits, and shored the upperweights with Fargo champion Jacob Raschka and FloNationals champion Jared Campbell.

...Greely - Just underway in his tenure as skipper, Troy Nickerson has done a fine job of recruiting for Northern Colorado. He already has nods from lightweight talents Chris Sandoval and Jaxon Cole.

...Ithaca - The future looks bright for the Big Red, who have commitments from two No. 1s in Yianni and Vito Arujau. They are supplemented by three other studs in Jonathan Gomez, Jake Brindley, and Andrew Berreyesa.

..Iowa City - A monster class for the Hawkeyes has already taken shape before the recruiting season technically began. The No. 1 overall prospect in the conversation for most dominant high school wrestler of all-time Spencer Lee leads the way. He’s part of a lightweight re-stock with Justin Mejia and Jason Renteria. A fourth top-100 recruit is Luke Troy. With the Hawks in play for several other blue chippers—including Brady Berge and Jacob Warner—this could be their third No. 1 recruiting class this decade.

Most Intriguing Situations To Monitor

#3 - Daton Fix: The nation’s highest-rated uncommitted recruit. Fix informed Flo of his final five schools earlier this week. The good money is on his home state Oklahoma State Cowboys, with whom his family has ties and already received a verbal from his BFF, No. 9 Kaden Gfeller. But Daton has repeatedly said he’s open to all options.

#4 - Chase Singletary: The nation’s best big man. Great on top, he’s an excellent folkstyle prospect. Four of the five schools on his list are the same as Fix’s: Oklahoma State, Penn State, Ohio State, and North Carolina.

#7 - Austin O’Connor: The Super 32 finalist is a tremendous talent who, despite giving us his school list, really hasn’t tipped his hand on which way he’s leaning.

# 10 - Brady Berge: With a significant change in projected college weight class (it appears he’s headed for a career at 149 as opposed to early projections that had him as high as 174) Berge’s recruiting is incredibly interesting. He can theoretically fit in beautifully in any of the five schools he lists:Minnesota, Penn State, Iowa, Purdue, and Nebraska.

#11 - Jacob Warner: With his stock skyrocketing after winning double titles in Akron, Warner is the No. 1 182-pounder in the country and a hot commodity.

#12 - Kevin Vough: The best true heavyweight prospect of the class in a particularly dry era for HWT recruits, Vough’s list can be found here. He made FloNational finals as a freshman, and though he hasn’t made the leaps you might have expected, he’s been pretty steady. It's impressive, considering he’s been a multi-sport athlete who's not focused on wrestling year-round.

National Signing Day

This year’s national signing day—the last day of the recruiting session to declare "early"—is November 16. Sponsored by ASICS, FloWrestling will host a special live show with commitments from Fix, Singletary, Berge, Warner, and several others.

Underclassmen

If we’ve learned anything the last few recruiting cycles, it’s that commitments can happen at any time. Adam Busiello, who just completed his freshman year of high school, recently committed to Penn State. So let’s talk a bit about talented underclassmen.

David Carr: A runner-up (to Berge) at Cadets last year. A Super 32 champion over O’Connor. And a cadet champion in Mat (over Joe Lee), Carr’s stock is sky-high. There are plenty of options and speculation. His father went to Iowa State. His brother coaches at Cornell. And he’s indicated an affinity for Nebraska.

Gable Steveson & Roman Bravo-Young: The bookend prospects and Cadet World Team-ers are likely a package deal, and I wouldn’t be surprised in the least to see them pull the trigger sooner rather than later. Minnesota, Ohio State, and Nebraska are are the frontrunners.
