Olympic Qualifiers Heading Into 'Last Chance' Tournaments
The Olympic Games in men’s divisions will be contested with a field of 19 competitors. Fourteen spots have been locked up, and just five spots are still available in each weight category. Three spots will be awarded in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, this weekend and two spots will be secured by the finalists at the final qualifier in Istanbul, Turkey, May 6-8.

The women’s freestyle division will have eighteen competitors, and two qualifications spots will be awarded at each of the tournaments.

Keep in mind that qualification spots are not awarded to individuals, but the countries they represent. The United States has several weight classes that will be represented by a different competitor than the one that qualified the weight class.

The United States will be represented by the Olympic Trials champion at each weight class that has not yet qualified in Mongolia and Turkey. This won’t be the case for all countries in the same position. Some countries haven’t gone through the selection process yet. European nations that have not qualified are just one week away from the European Olympic Games Qualifier. This puts them in a precarious position to decide if they will use the same wrestler, or send a different representative to try and qualify in Mongolia. I don’t have confirmation of all health situations and wrestle-offs, but some countries appeared to not send their top representative to the European Qualifier. That could be a sound strategy, since the fields at the last-chance qualifiers are typically not as strong as the European Qualifier.

The United States qualified for Rio after Tony Ramos' performance at the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier. The weight is deep worldwide with talent spread out over many countries. India is one of the most interesting countries looking for qualification with three capable guys available to compete. Amit Kumar and Rahul Aware have come up short at the world championships and Asian qualifier, but Sandeep Tomar could be used in the qualification process as well.

This is the deepest weight worldwide in the freestyle discipline. 57kg has more title contenders spread out among different countries, but the number of medal-worthy competitors at 65kg is ridiculous. Frank Molinaro will have two chances to qualify the weight class after Brent Metcalf came up short at Worlds and Pan-Ams.

A former medalist and a world champion from this cycle are still looking for qualification as the last two chances to qualify for the Olympic Games are upon us. David Safaryan had an exceptional 2013, winning both Euros and Worlds at 66kg. However, he hasn’t been able to replicate that success since, and is still looking to qualify Armenia for Rio. Mihail Sava earned bronze in 2014 with a repechage win over Mustafa Kaya of Turkey. Kaya is still working on qualifying Turkey.

One of the most interesting stories of the qualification process comes from Bahrain. Adam Batirov is competing for the tiny nation in the Persian Gulf. Batirov is the brother of two-time Olympic Gold medalist Mavlet Batirov. He made a Russian world team back in 2011 at 66kg, and more recently lost in the semifinals at the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier to Katal Yeerlanbieke of China.

Jordan Burroughs qualified the United States with his world title performance in Las Vegas, but this weight doesn’t have enough spots to take all of the top competitors in the field. Rashid Kurbanov and Ali Shabanov both earned world medals in the past, and are the most credentialed wrestlers in the field looking for qualification.

Another interesting storyline is Taimuraz Friev Naskideava of Spain. He has spent the majority of his career at 86kg and lost a bronze-medal match at the 2013 at the old 84kg weight class. Down a weight class, he made his presence known at the European Olympic Games Qualifier after knocking off Soener Demirtas of Turkey in the early rounds.

Ibragim Aldatov is the big name trying to qualify for Rio. He won world titles in 2006 and 2013, and is as inconsistent as they come, but look out when he's on.

Three wrestlers from the Pan-Am qualifying region are poised to make an impact on this class. Pedro Francisco Ceballos Fuentes defeated Reineris Salas Perez at the world championships last year, but didn’t make a medal match to qualify. He was defeated by Jake Herbert at the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier and should factor into the qualification spots.

Pool Edison Ambrocio Greifo was less than 10 seconds away from securing his trip to Rio when he was taken down by 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jaime Espinal at the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier.

J’Den Cox will represent the United States. He is dynamic on his feet and truly unknown in foreign competition. When you consider he traded wins back and forth with Kyle Snyder in age group tournaments in the United States, he has to be someone to watch heading into Rio.

The United States will be represented by Kyle Snyder in Rio. The field at 97kg has the main contenders already qualified.

Khuderbulga Dorjkhand will look to take advantage of the home mats to qualify Mongolia’s spot in Rio. Ivan Yankouski had back-to-back silver-medal finishes at the Medved and European Championships. Unfortunately for Belarus, Yankouski was defeated at the qualifier in the early rounds by Albania’s Egzon Shala. Albania isn’t qualified yet, and will look secure a spot in Rio also.

Russia is still working on qualifying the weight class as well, and should be the chief rival for Maroulis in the bracket. Keep in mind that only two qualification spots are available on the women’s side in Mongolia.
