The Olympic Games in men’s divisions will be contested with a field of 19 competitors. Fourteen spots have been locked up, and just five spots are still available in each weight category. Three spots will be awarded in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, this weekend and two spots will be secured by the finalists at the final qualifier in Istanbul, Turkey, May 6-8.
The women’s freestyle division will have eighteen competitors, and two qualifications spots will be awarded at each of the tournaments.
Keep in mind that qualification spots are not awarded to individuals, but the countries they represent. The United States has several weight classes that will be represented by a different competitor than the one that qualified the weight class.
The United States will be represented by the Olympic Trials champion at each weight class that has not yet qualified in Mongolia and Turkey. This won’t be the case for all countries in the same position. Some countries haven’t gone through the selection process yet. European nations that have not qualified are just one week away from the European Olympic Games Qualifier. This puts them in a precarious position to decide if they will use the same wrestler, or send a different representative to try and qualify in Mongolia. I don’t have confirmation of all health situations and wrestle-offs, but some countries appeared to not send their top representative to the European Qualifier. That could be a sound strategy, since the fields at the last-chance qualifiers are typically not as strong as the European Qualifier.
The United States qualified for Rio after Tony Ramos' performance at the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier. The weight is deep worldwide with talent spread out over many countries. India is one of the most interesting countries looking for qualification with three capable guys available to compete. Amit Kumar and Rahul Aware have come up short at the world championships and Asian qualifier, but Sandeep Tomar could be used in the qualification process as well.
Belarus
India
Turkey
Ukraine
This is the deepest weight worldwide in the freestyle discipline. 57kg has more title contenders spread out among different countries, but the number of medal-worthy competitors at 65kg is ridiculous. Frank Molinaro will have two chances to qualify the weight class after Brent Metcalf came up short at Worlds and Pan-Ams.
A former medalist and a world champion from this cycle are still looking for qualification as the last two chances to qualify for the Olympic Games are upon us. David Safaryan had an exceptional 2013, winning both Euros and Worlds at 66kg. However, he hasn’t been able to replicate that success since, and is still looking to qualify Armenia for Rio. Mihail Sava earned bronze in 2014 with a repechage win over Mustafa Kaya of Turkey. Kaya is still working on qualifying Turkey.
One of the most interesting stories of the qualification process comes from Bahrain. Adam Batirov is competing for the tiny nation in the Persian Gulf. Batirov is the brother of two-time Olympic Gold medalist Mavlet Batirov. He made a Russian world team back in 2011 at 66kg, and more recently lost in the semifinals at the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier to Katal Yeerlanbieke of China.
Belarus
Bulgaria
Georgia
Turkey
United States
Jordan Burroughs qualified the United States with his world title performance in Las Vegas, but this weight doesn’t have enough spots to take all of the top competitors in the field. Rashid Kurbanov and Ali Shabanov both earned world medals in the past, and are the most credentialed wrestlers in the field looking for qualification.
Another interesting storyline is Taimuraz Friev Naskideava of Spain. He has spent the majority of his career at 86kg and lost a bronze-medal match at the 2013 at the old 84kg weight class. Down a weight class, he made his presence known at the European Olympic Games Qualifier after knocking off Soener Demirtas of Turkey in the early rounds.
Bulgaria
Turkey
Uzbekistan
Ibragim Aldatov is the big name trying to qualify for Rio. He won world titles in 2006 and 2013, and is as inconsistent as they come, but look out when he's on.
Three wrestlers from the Pan-Am qualifying region are poised to make an impact on this class. Pedro Francisco Ceballos Fuentes defeated Reineris Salas Perez at the world championships last year, but didn’t make a medal match to qualify. He was defeated by Jake Herbert at the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier and should factor into the qualification spots.
Pool Edison Ambrocio Greifo was less than 10 seconds away from securing his trip to Rio when he was taken down by 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jaime Espinal at the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier.
J’Den Cox will represent the United States. He is dynamic on his feet and truly unknown in foreign competition. When you consider he traded wins back and forth with Kyle Snyder in age group tournaments in the United States, he has to be someone to watch heading into Rio.
The United States will be represented by Kyle Snyder in Rio. The field at 97kg has the main contenders already qualified.
Khuderbulga Dorjkhand will look to take advantage of the home mats to qualify Mongolia’s spot in Rio. Ivan Yankouski had back-to-back silver-medal finishes at the Medved and European Championships. Unfortunately for Belarus, Yankouski was defeated at the qualifier in the early rounds by Albania’s Egzon Shala. Albania isn’t qualified yet, and will look secure a spot in Rio also.
Mongolia
Aiaal Lazarev of Kyrgyzstan is ranked No. 12 in the world, and the highest-regarded wrestler looking for qualification. Most medal contenders are already qualified at 125kg.
Haley Augello will try to qualify the weight class for the United States. She defeated Victoria Anthony to earn the spot on the United States team. Anthony won the prestigious Klippan Open this season, and was highly ranked in the world.
Maryna Markevich was last seen on the world stage in 2008. She finished second at 51kg at the World Championships that year. She has had good results since coming back to the mat in November of 2015.
The United States is not qualified at 53kg. Helen Maroulis might be the the only current reigning world champion still looking for qualification. She is a reigning world champion, but hasn't qualified because she won at the non-Olympic weight class of 55kg.
Russia is still working on qualifying the weight class as well, and should be the chief rival for Maroulis in the bracket. Keep in mind that only two qualification spots are available on the women’s side in Mongolia.
Kelsey Campbell regained the United States' spot from Alli Ragan, who lost a heartbreaking match to Michelle Fazzari at the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier. She will be challenged by Russia's representative as one of the main hurdles to qualifying the weight class for Rio. Emese Barka is a 2013 world bronze medalist for Hungary that is also trying to qualify the weight class.
Erin Clodgo qualified the weight class for the United States. She lost the spot to Elena Pirozhkova who returned to the lighter weight class from 69kg. Marianna Sastin is a former world champion looking to qualify Hungary at 63kg.
Tamyra Mensah was defeated by Canadian rival Dorothy Yeats at the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier. She earned her spot on the United States team, but needs to qualify the weight class for Rio. Alina Makynia of Ukraine is a former world champion looking to secure her spot at the Olympic Games.
Adeline Gray qualified the United States when she won the gold medal in Las Vegas at the world championships. Ekaterina Burkina of Russia is currently the highest ranked wrestler at the weight class that has not qualified for the Olympic Games.
Jesse Theilke faces a stout field in Mongolia. The weight class has former world champions Hamid Soryan of Iran and Ivo Angelov of Bulgaria trying to qualify. Soryan is an all-time great that has had some struggles over the past year. This field will be a huge test as he tries to qualify the weight class for Rio.
RaVaughn Perkins is trying to qualify the weight class for the United States. Hasan Aliyev or Rasul Chunayev were expected to compete for Azerbaijan, but don't appear to be weighed in because they are without a number from the random draw. Tamas Lorincz of Hungary is another expected contender that without a drawn number.
Andy Bisek qualified the United States with a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships. This field is incredibly deep, and big names like Selcuk Cebi of Turkey, Arsen Julfalakyan of Armenia and Peter Bacsi of Hungary received draw numbers in Mongolia. Let that sink in.... Yes, three world champions from 2014 or 2015 are trying to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Jordan Holm qualified the United States for the Olympic Games by winning the Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier. The spot will be represented by Ben Provisor since he won the Olympic Team Trials at 85kg. The trend of former world champions looking for qualification continues here at 85kg. Melanin Noumonvi of France will try to secure one of the qualification spots available.
Joe Rau has the qualification task ahead of him for the United States. The field at 98kg doesn't have the star power of some of the other weight classes, and only Cenk Ildem of Turkey has a world medal on his resume.
Robby Smith qualified with a fifth-place finish at the world championships. Iosif Chugoshvili of Belarus is the highest-ranked wrestler looking to qualify. He is closely followed by Johan Magnus Euren of Sweden in the rankings. Eurex will also try to secure a qualification spot in Mongolia.
