The Olympics are the pinnacle of our sport. When you hear the greats talk about their goals, an Olympic gold medal always sits at the top of the list. We have tracked the competitors who have qualified for the Olympic Team Trials, but more importantly the country needs to qualify for the Olympic Games.
There are 19 spots available in each bracket. Six of the spots are already allocated from the World Championships. Wrestlers who wrestled for a medal in Las Vegas earned the qualification spot for their country. The remaining 13 spots will be earned through continental qualifiers and two last chance tournaments.
The United States qualified two Greco Roman weight classes (75kg and 130kg), two freestyle weight classes (74kg and 97kg), and one women’s weight class (75kg) at the world championships where the USA wrestler finished in the top six. Keep in mind James Green, Leigh Jaynes-Provisor, and Helen Maroulis earned medals in non-Olympic weights. These medals did not do anything for the qualification procedure.
The continental qualification tournaments are the next step in the qualifying procedure. The Pan American Qualification Tournament (live on FloWrestling) opens the series of qualifiers on March 4-6 in Frisco, TX. Two spots are available at each weight class. The other continental qualifiers will follow the Pan Am Qualifier, prior to the two last chance qualifying tournaments.
The United States will have three chances to qualify the weight classes. After the Pan American Qualification Tournament, the United States is eligible to send representatives at unqualified weight classes to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia April 22-24, 2016. The representative must place in the top three in Mongolia to qualify. If there are weight classes still not qualified after Mongolia, the last chance to earn a spot in #Rio2016 will happen May 6-8, 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey.
There are 18 weight classes across the three styles that will be contested at the Olympic Games. Russia leads the way with 12 earned bids after the world championships. Their men’s freestyle team is the only team from any country to earn all six qualification spots in Las Vegas. Iran’s men’s freestyle and Japan’s women’s freestyle both qualified five out of the six weight categories.
