Good news for Cyclone fans. You got a good one coming. Iowa State recently received a verbal commitment from Illinois’ Austin Gomez.
Gomez, an Illinois State Champ for Glenbard North is entering his Junior Season ranked 5th in a loaded 120 pound weight class. For the Class of 2017 Flo Big Board Gomez checks in at #8 overall.
The Fargo champ boasts wins over a number of household names: Cade Olivas (twice), Justin Mejia, Kaden Gfeller, Ian Parker and Ethan Lizak to name a few. Gomez is a fantastic technician who can wrestle well both in and out of the ties. He has a powerful double leg he can shoot from space but he can score well within the ties. He recently won Cadet Pan Am titles in both Greco and Freestyle (Winning OW for both styles) which speaks to how well-rounded Austin is as a wrestler.
Gomez projects as a 125/133 at the next level which will fit nicely for the Cyclones especially if Nathan Boston eventually outgrows 125. Gomez is ISU's first top 100 verbal for the class of 2017. Though it’s awfully early in the process, this is a great start to the haul for Coach Jackson and company.
We reached out to Austin for his thoughts on why he chose Iowa State:
"I choose ISU because it's home. I felt like that's where I needed to be and it was the perfect fit. It was a love at first sight kind of deal. Coach Jackson is the best coach in the country I believe and if I want to be a multiple NCAA champ and world/Olympic champ that's where I need to be because of Coach Jackson and the Paulson brothers! I'm going to wrestle either 125 or 133, whatever Coach Jackson wants me to wrestle I will do as he says. I chose Iowa State over Ohio St., Penn St, ASU, Illinois and Michigan."
