NCAA Division I Wrestling 149-Pound Redshirt Report
When the 2015 NCAA season rolls around, we'll see a large crop of talent from the 149 pound weight class.  With several NCAA All American's graduating from a year ago, we're sure to see many of these wrestlers step on and contribute at 149 pounds.

But first, allow me to begin with a correction:

Rick Durso-Franklin & Marshall-Apparently I should have had Durso in here yesterday for my 141 report. So he won’t be at 149, but I wanted to get this name back on your mind, so here’s a little bonus write up. He wrestled the entire season at 149 and honestly was pretty dang good. However, it sounds like he’ll be making the cut back down to 141 for next year. Durso placed 8th at NCAA's in 2014.  He notched wins over Lenny Richardson, Charles Cobb, Brody Grothus, Solomon Chishko, Daniel Neff and Laike Gardner! He’s been great at 141 with wins over Mecate, Nevinger and Collica. He did have a weird loss to Seth Lange (by fall), but nothing to get overly concerned about.

On to 149 pounds!

Edgar Bright-Pittsburgh-The Mail Man will be back for the Panthers next year. It’s a bit unclear if he’ll slot in at 149 or higher, but it seems all but confirmed Edgar has outgrown 141. He only wrestled 7 matches this year, just 1 at 141 which was a 3-2 win over Kade Moss. His lone loss was to Josh Kindig and he was able to beat Zach Beitz, Tyler Berger and Matt Frisch. Edgar was solid as a True Freshman for the Panthers when he knocked off Evan Henderson (twice!?), Joe Spisak and Sam Speno. They still have a redshirt to play with for Mike Racciato, so if they want to give him one, this could be the ideal time.

Dylan Cottrell-West Virgina-It’s a unique situation for Cottrell who transferred in the middle of last season from Appalachain State to West Virginia. He wrestled half the year for App State where he knocked off Racciato and Lopez. He was very productive 2 years ago as well when he was an NCAA qualifier. Under Henson and company you can expect improvement for Cottrell. The lone ranked win he had last year was over Mike Racciato, but he also knocked off Tywan Claxton as well last year

Solomon Chishko-Virginia Tech-The 141/149 situation for Virginia Tech is a bit murky right now. With two natural 149’s in Chishko and Mastriani (Round of 12 this year at NCAA's ) and nowhere to go but down (Brascetta at 157), something’s gotta give. My thoughts are Mastriani may have to make the cut all the way down. What I’ve seen of Chishko is that he should be excellent next year and the feelings are echoed by anyone you talk to at VT.   He notched wins over Christian Pagdilao, Laike Gardner, Grant Leeth and Troy Heilmann. He fell twice to Micah Jordan as well as All Americans Lenny Richardson and Rick Durso.  He's a neutral dynamo with a great single leg (though he was very well known for his double in high school).  He attacks frequently and has more power than you'd expect from his frame.

Jake Sueflohn-Nebraska-We’ve all watched Jake Sueflohn through the years and he’s been the epitome of solid from day 1. For my money he’s the best guy in NCAA’s without an AA finish. Sueflohn has wins in his career over Hunter Stieber, Eric Grajales, Brody Grothus and more. He’s got a tremendous motor as well as great feel and scrambling ability. He suffered a set back this year when he injured his knee which forced him to have to take a redshirt.  It is possible he will take some lumps to start the year, but once he rounds into form, Sueflohn will be gassing out 149 pounders nation wide!

Laike Gardner-Lehigh-The Mountain Hawk will move up a weight from his previous year of varsity competition. Laike was an NCAA qualifier 2 years ago at 141. Last year he redshirted and had quite a busy years. He fell to Habat, Durso, Ruschell, Cobb, Chishko and Oliver. Gardner notched wins over Micah Jordan and Matt Cimato. Gardner is a tremendous scrambler and can attack the legs as well. His upside may not be as high as others, but I think he can potentially contend for All American status.

Micah Jordan-Ohio State: A lot of questions surrounding Micah coming into next year.  What weight will Micah go?  Typically with redshirt seasons you'll see the guys wrestle down a weight early, then maybe go up a weight later in the year.  Micah did the exact opposite.  Part of that was due to Hunter's health problems, but you have to wonder if his success there may make it the long term plan.   It really hinges on Hunter being able to go down to 141 again.  Micah going up to 157 pounds would be fine for Micah as he was certainly successful there as well.   Micah only suffered one loss last year to the aforementioned Laike Gardner.  He notched a few wins over Jake Danishek, Solomon Chishko as well as TC Warner.  Micah may not be Bo, but I firmly expect him to come in and potentially place and place highly.  Like Bo, he's got a great single, tremendous hand fighting skills and very solid top work.

Tyson Dippery-Rutgers-I’m operating under the assumption that Dippery will be at 149 next year though he competed at both 141 and 149 this season. Hitting up a whopping 8 tournaments, Dippery earned some major mat time as well as quite a few wins along the way. Coming in with around 40 matches under his belt I feel like Tyson will be ready to qualify and contribute considerably for the Scarlet Knights next year.  I'm not yet sold on him as an All-American but am intrigued with him and think you should have your eye on him.
