FloNationals Preview

After five years of FloNationals, the talent that has come through the tournament is producing at the next level. This year, four former FloNats All Americans won Division I titles, another a Division II title, with 19 more DI All Americans.

The entries at the 6th FloNationals will look to continue that trend in the future. The ever-present list of PA talent is bolstered by dynamite contingents from Missouri, Oklahoma, and California. Of course New Jersey and New York are well represented, and three state champions from Ohio’s St. Paris-Graham are in the field too.

Amazingly, there are eight former FloNationals Champions back for another belt.

Sam Krivus and Brent Moore are both at 138. Devin Schroder (113), Xavier Montalvo (160), Dylan Wisman (182) and Kevin Vough (HWT) are back at the same exact weight they won a year ago. Yianni (120) returns from winning a title at 106 last year. And Luke Pletcher (126) was a champ in 2013 who finished runner-up last year.

Below is a breakdown of each weight with rankings, a sampling of their accomplishments, commentary, and predictions.

Note - wrestlers are listed in order of their preseeds.

106:
1. HM-(at 113)-Jr. Paul Konrath, IN - State 3rd, Fargo Cadet FS Champ
2. HM-(at 113)-Jr. Sidney Oliver, Wentzville, MO - State Champ, Fargo 7th
3. #13-So. Shane Metzler, West Morris, NJ - State 4th, Super 32 6th

13. 7th Grade - Josh Saunders, Florisant, MO - #3 Junior High Wrestler
14. 8th Grade - Julian Chlebove, Northampton, PA - #6 Junior High Wrestler

Notes: 106 is always my favorite weight and this one has so much diversity. It’s lead by a couple 113’s that drop. I like Oliver’s style to be a big problem.
One guy I’m super high on is Humphreys. And I have a feeling Parker, a Reno Runner-Up to Timmins, is going to have a big weekend.
But all eyes should be on the two junior high guys. I guarantee Saunders and Chlebove are household names in due time. The question is, are they ready now?

Willie’s Picks: 1. Oliver, MO 2. Konrath, IN 3. Parker, UT 4. Metzler, NJ
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Metzler, NJ 2. Konrath, IN 3. Hayes, IL 4. Kinner, NJ

16. Jr. Edward Chalifoux, TN - Fargo AA, State Champ
17. So. Clayton Berry, Holt, MO - State Runner-Up
18. So. Drew West, Highland, IA - State 3rd

Notes: Everyone knew Schroder was tough last year, but beating Arajau in the finals was a revelation. He’s back again at the same weight, and though the field is deep, he should be considered the favorite.
Gfeller and Timmins could meet again after their epic Fargo match. If ya haven’t seen it, you got to.
Garrett Rowe just ran through a gauntlet to win a OK title. And Joey Silva looked amazing in VA Beach.
Watch for Duffield and Courtney. Both are sneaky picks.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Gfeller, OK 2. Schroder, MI 3. Courtney, PA 4. Timmins, NV
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Timmins, NV 2. Schroder, MI 3. Gfeller, OK 4. Silva, FL
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Gfeller, OK 2. Schroder, MI 3. Timmins, NV 4. Courtney, PA
Nick’s Picks: 1. Schroder, MI 2. Gfeller, OK 3. Timmins, NV 4. Duffield, OK

120:
1. #3-So. Yianni Diakomihalis, Hilton, NY - 2x State Champ, Returning Flo Champ, S32 Champ, Fargo Runner-Up
2. #4-So. Daton Fix, Sand Springs, OK - 2x State Champ, Double Fargo Champ, Cadet World Team Member

9. HM-Jr. Tariq Wilson, Steubenville, OH - State Runner-Up
10. Jr. Reiley Brown, White Lake, MI - State Champ
11. Jr. Josiah Kline, Rock Bridge, MO - 2014 State Champ
12. Fr. Andrew Wert, Trinity, PA - State 5th

*Scratched *3. #3-Jr. Rudy Yates, Carl Sandburg, IL - Returning Runner-Up

Others to Watch: Dylan Udero, NM, Austin Griffiths, PA

Notes: Yianni and Fix met in the highest of profile matches in Super 32 finals with Yianni frustrating the tar out of Fix. While we’d love to see what adjustments Fix can make, the weight is too loaded to assume that’s the final. Taylor Lamont has beaten the top names in the country and should pose the biggest threat. And the always-steady Doyle Trout looms as well.
Last year, while 8th graders, Mitch Moore and Sammy Sasso proved they were the truth at FloNats. Sasso beat Cali State Champ (and now the #1 wrestler at 113), Justin Mejia. Moore beat Sasso.
The guy I’m most interested in gauging is Tariq Wilson, a state runner-up last month to Tyler Warner.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Fix, OK 2. Yianni, NY 3. Lamont, UT 4. Sasso, PA
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Yianni, NY 2. Fix, OK 3. Friedman, MD 4. Trout, NE
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Yianni, NY 2. Fix, OK 3. Sasso, PA 4. Trout, NE
Nick’s Picks: 1. Fix, OK 2. Yianni, NY 3. Lamont, UT 3. Moore, OH

126:
1. #4-(at 132)-Jr. Luke Pletcher, Greater Latrobe, PA - 2x FloNats Finalist, 3x State Finalist, S32 Champ

13. Jr. Taylor Ortz, Brookville, PA - State 3rd
14. Jr. Seth Hogue, Reynolds, PA - State Runner-Up
15. Sr. Tristan Law, Forest Hills, PA - State 4th
16. Fr. Justin McCoy, Chestnut Ridge, PA - State 6th

*Scratched *10. HM-Fr. Cole Matthews, Reynolds, PA - State Champ

Notes: Pletcher is looking to become the second wrestler to place at FloNats 4x’s, and the first to make three finals. He’ll have to contend with Chad Red, the #1 wrestler in the country. The duo won back-to-back Super 32 titles in Greensboro last fall.
The rest of the field is super deep and features Dylan Duncan, who beat Yianni in Fargo finals last summer. As sneaky picks, check out the Sophomore state runner-up Zack Trampe and both the boys from Michigan.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Pletcher, PA 2. Red, IN 3. Storr, MI 4. Smith, MO
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Red, IN 2. Pletcher, PA 3. Storr, MI 4. Patrick, PA
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Pletcher, PA 2. Red, IN 3. Duncan, IL 4. Trampe, PA
Nick’s Picks: 1. Red, IN 2. Pletcher, PA 3. Smith, MO 4. Duncan, IL

132:
1. #3-(at 138)-Sr. Keegan Moore, Putnam City, OK - Returning 3rd, Fargo 3rd
2. #11-(at 138)-Sr. Jaydin Clayton, Fulton, MO - Returning 4th, 2x Fargo AA, 4x State Champ

4. HM-Sr. Angel Velasquez, Central Catholic, CA - 2x State 4th, NHSCA Champ
5. HM-Sr. Will Clark, Cary, NC - 2x State Champ, 2014 NHSCA JR Champ
6. HM-Fr. Anthony Artalona, Tampa Prep, FL - 2x State Champ
7 Jr. Mike Van Brill, Clearview, NJ - State 5th
8. HM-Fr. Brayton Lee, Brownsburg, IN - #16 Freshman
9. HM-Fr. Jake Hinkson, North Allegheny, PA - State 5th, NHSCA Champ
10. So. Ryan Hansen, Maple Mountain, UT - State 3rd
11. Jr. Kollin Wade, Cary, NC - State Champ, NHSCA Placer

Notes: Moore’s only loss here last year came to Brent Moore, who went on to win the title. He beat Cash in consi semi’s, 12-6. Clayton is coming off a big win over Kaid Brock.
Keep an eye on the Freshmen. Artalona, Lee, and Hinkson could all cause a stir.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Moore, OK 2. Clayton, MO 3. Cash, IN 4. Artalona, FL
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Clayton, MO 2. Moore, OK 3. Velasquez, CA 4. Clark, NC
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Clayton, MO 2. Moore, OK 3. Velasquez, CA 4. Cash, IN
Nick’s Picks: 1. Clayton, MO 2. Moore, OK 3. Clark, NC 4. Velasquez, CA

138:
1. #6-Sr. Sam Krivus, Hempfield, PA - 2x State Champ, 3x Super 32 Champ, 2x FloNats Champ
2. #19-(at 145)-Jr. Brent Moore, St. Paris, OH - State Champ, Returning Champ
3. #11-Sr. Will Roark, Seneca, MO - 3x State Champ, Fargo AA
4. #18-(at 132)-Sr. Jon Furnas, OH - State Champ, S32 8th
5. #20-Fr. Frankie Gissendanner, Penfield, NY - State Champ
6. HM-(at 145)-Sr. Kent Lane, Southern Columbia, PA - 2x State Finalist, 2x FloNats AA
7. Jr. Shae Bloom, Curwensville, PA - State 5th
8. Jr. Matt Lattanze, Malvern Prep, PA - Prep 7th
9. Jr. Dylan Chatterton, Central York, PA - State 5th
10. Fr. Trevor Lawson, St. Paris, OH

Notes: Krivus joined an exclusive club of 3x Super 32 Champs to begin the season. He could make FloNats history by becoming the first to win three titles to end it. To do so, he’ll have to get by a bevy of talent that includes returning champ Moore, the highly underrated Jon Furnas, Roark, Lane, and the fab frosh Gissendanner. Consider that Mike D’Angelo just won NHSCA’s, then recall Gissendanner beat D’Angelo twice this year, including in the state finals.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Krivus, PA 2. Roark, MO 3. Moore, OH 4. Lane, PA
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Krivus, PA 2. Gissendanner, NY 3. Moore, OH 4. Lane, PA
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Krivus, PA 2. Moore, OH 3. Lane, PA 4. Roark, MO
Nick’s Picks: 1. Krivus, PA 3. Roark, MO 3. Moore, OH 4. Lane, PA

145:
1. #6-Jr. Hayden Hidlay, Mifflin County, PA - State 3rd, Fargo Runner-Up, S32 3rd
2. #10-Sr. Zachary Moore, Putnam City, OK - State Champ, State Runner-Up
3. #7-(at 152)-Jr. Austin Kraisser, Centennial, MD - 3x State Finalist, Returning 8th
4. #16-(at 152)-Sr. Jake Restrepo, Sachem East, NY - State Champ, 2x Eastern States Champ
5. #17-(at 152)-So. Kyle Lawson, St. Paris, OH - 2x State Champ, 2x Ironman Placer
6. #18-(at 152)-Sr. Johnny O’Hearon, Maple Mountain, UT - 2x State Champ, FILA 5th
7. HM-Jr. Foster Karmon, Grand Rapids CC, MI - 2x State Champ
8. HM-Sr. Jesse Porter, Shenendehowa, NY - State 3rd, 4x Fargo AA
9. HM-Jr. Jon Ross, Northern York, PA - State 5th, 2x Fargo AA
10. Sr. Isaiah Hokit, Clovis, CA - 4x State Placer
11. Jr. Jimmy Saylor, Easton, PA - 2x NHSCA Finalist, State 7th
12. Fr. Robert Patrick, Ligionier Valley, PA - State Runner-Up, NHSCA Runner-Up
13. Fr. Jared Lough, Fredericksburg, VA - State 3rd, NHSCA Runner-Up

Notes: People have said that Zach Moore was the real deal for years. But injuries kept him out of major action. He returned this year to beat nationally ranked Tristan Moran for the state title.
This weight contains several ranked guys coming down from 152, and HM-Jesse Porter, who should be huge at the weight.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Moore, OK 2. Hidlay, PA 3. Kraisser, MD 4. Lawson, OH
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Hidlay, PA 2. Kraisser, MD 3. Moore, OK 4. Restrepo, NY
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Hidlay, PA 2. Moore, OK 3. Restrepo, NY 4. Kraisser, MD
Nick’s Picks: 1. Hidlay, PA 2. Moore, OK 3. Lawson, OH 4. Kraisser, MD

152:
1. Jr. Mason Manville, VA - Cadet World Champion
2. #5-Jr. Jake Wentzel, South Park, PA - State Champ, S32 3rd
3. #8-Jr. Wyatt Sheets, Stillwell, OK - 3x State Champ, Reno Champ, FILA 3rd
4. #12-(at 160)-Sr. Connor Flynn, Francis Howell, MO - State Champ
5. #14-Jr. Kaleb Young, Punxsutawney, PA - State 4th, FloNats 7th, S32 7th
6. #18-(at 160)-Sr. Corbin Allen, Hanover, VA - 2x State Champ, Beast Runner-Up, Fargo 4th
7. HM-So. Louie Deprez, Hilton, NY - State Champ, Returning 8th
8. HM-Sr. Adam Martz, Mountain Ridge, MD - 3x State Champ, Returning 5th
9. Sr. Milik Dawkins, Ainsworth, MI - State Runner-Up
10. Jr. Garrett Tingen, Fauquier, VA - State Champ
11. So. Jason Hoffman, Lake George, NY - State Runner-Up
12. Sr. Brandon Aviles, John Glenn, NY - State 3rd
13. So. Nino Bonacorsi, North Allegheny, PA - State 6th
14. Jr. Sam Goings, Churchill, NV - NHSCA and Reno Placer

Notes: The return of Mason Manville. He’s been training international styles, but I think it’s safe to say his folk will be just fine.
One of my most anticipated bouts will come with Sheets (son of OK State National Champ, Mike Sheets) facing Wentzel in the semi’s in a battle of top juniors.
The wildcard here should be a cut down Allen.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Manville, VA 2. Wentzel, PA 3. Allen, VA 4. Sheets, OK
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Manville, VA 2. Sheets, OK 3. Wentzel, PA 4. Allen, VA
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Manville, VA 2. Sheets, OK 3. Wentzel, PA 4. Allen, VA
Nick’s Picks: 1. Manville, VA 2. Wentzel, PA 3. Flynn, MO 4. Young, PA

160:
1. #9-(at 182)-Sr. Xavier Montalvo, Montini, IL - Returning Champ, 3x State Champ
2. #13-Sr. Devin Skatzka, Richmond, MI - 4x State Champ, Returning 3rd
3. #4-Sr. Cole Walter, Mifflinburg, PA - Returning 4th, State Champ, S32 4th
4. HM-Jr. Alex Herringshaw, Holland, NY - 2x State Champ, NHSCA Champ
5. #19-Jr. Elijah Cleary, Lake Highland, FL - State Champ, Dvorak Champ
6. Jr. Tucker Leavitt, Highland, ID - 2x State Champ, NHSCA Runner-Up
7. Sr. Connor Lawrence, Duanesburg, NY - State 2nd, State 3rd
8. Jr. Noah Stewart, Mifflin County, PA - State 4th
9. Sr. Gabe Koontz, Edgewood, IN - State 5th
10. Sr. Sam Rowell, Mt. St. Joe’s, MD - National Prep 3rd

Notes: Montalvo is back for another title after winning his third state championship, this one all the way up at 182. Skatzka beat Walters here a year ago his only loss was to runner-up Bova in quarters.
I really want to get a look at Herringshaw, who’s been on a tear with his second state title and an NHSCA crown.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Montalvo, IL 2. Walter, PA 3. Skatzka, MI 4. Herringshaw, NY
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Montalvo, IL 2. Walter, PA 3. Cleary, FL 4. Herringshaw, NY
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Montalvo, IL 2. Walter, PA 3. Cleary, FL 4. Leavitt, ID
Nick’s Picks: 1. Montalvo, IL 2. Walter, PA 3. Skatzka, MI 4. Cleary, FL

170:
1. #6-Jr. Nick Reenan, TX - Double Fargo Champ, Prep Champ, FILA Champ, Ironman 3rd
2. #15-(at 182)-Sr. Jacob Armstrong, Salem Hills, UT - 3x State Champ, Fargo AA
3. #14-Sr. Hayden Hansen, Norman N., OK - State Runner-Up, Geary Runner-Up, Fargo AA
4. HM-Fr. Brandon Whitman, Dundee, MI - State Champ

19. Sr. Raekwon Reggler, Somerset Academy, FL - State Champ, Folk Nats 5th
20. Jr. Devon Pingel, Lampeer, MI - State 4th

Notes: Perhaps the deepest weight in the tournament. Reenan moves up and is top dog. But he’ll have a big test in a projected semi with the winner of stud freshman Whitman and Bell, who was 3rd at S32 with a win over Allard.
The sneakiest pick in the group is Beard, the gritty freshman.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Reenan, TX 2. Hansen, OK 3. Armstrong, UT 4. Bell, PA
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Reenan, TX 2. Hansen, OK 3. Armstrong, UT 4. Whitman, MI
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Reenan, TX 2. Beard, PA 3. Hokit, CA 4. Bell, PA
Nick’s Picks: 1. Reenan, TX 2. Hansen, OK 3. Armstrong, UT 4. Whitman, MI

3. HM-Jr. Dakota Geer, Franklin, PA - State Champ, Returning 8th, S32 7th
4. HM-Sr. Corey Hazel, Penns Valley, PA - State Runner-Up

10. Fr. Tyler Koreski, Parkersburg South, WV - State Champ
11. So. Casey Cornett, Simon Kenton, KY - NHSCA Runner-Up

Notes: Another champ back to defend his belt. Amazingly, Wisman was one of three in this field, along with Singletary and Frankrone, to win NHSCA titles just three days ago. Wisman beat Singletary 5-3 in Beast semi’s.
Geer edged Hazel in state finals.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Wisman, VA 2. Singletary, FL 3. Hazel, PA 4. Geer, PA
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Wisman, VA 2. Geer, PA 3. Singletary, FL 4. Bivens, NC
Ryan’s Picks: 1. Wisman, VA 2. Singletary, FL 3. Geer, PA 4. Bivens, NC
Nick’s Picks: 1. Wisman, VA 2. Singletary, FL 3. Geer, PA 4. Hazel, PA

10. HM-Jr. Landon Pelham, Tecumseh, MI - State 3rd, FILA 4th, Returning 7th
10. Jr. Nick McShea, Monroe-Woodbury, NY - State Runner-Up
12. Sr. George Lahar, Birch Run, MI - 2x State 3rd
13. Jr. Trey Hartsock, Mifflin County, PA - State 7th

Notes: One of the best, though less heralded, groups of five in the tournament. Rypel just made the finals of VA Beach where he lost to Sammy Colbray.
Sutton had a big win in state finals over Matt Correnti. Cooper’s only loss at S32 was to Hunter Ritter.
Koelling is a guy who flies under the radar. He could have a breakthrough weekend.
Keep your eyes on Jeff Allen, a legitimate darkhorse threat.

Willie’s Picks: 1. Sutton, NJ 2. Koelling, UT 3. Rypel, IN 4. Cooper, MO
Vinny’s Picks: 1. Cooper, MO 2. Rypel, IN 3. Sutton, NJ 4. Koelling, UT

220:
1. #3-Sr. Austin Myers, Campbell County, KY - 4x State Champ, 4x NHSCA Finalist, Fargo AA
2. #20-Jr. Luke Ready, Brighton, MI - State Champ
3. HM-Jr. Kevin Koenig, Laingsburg, MI - 3x State finalist
4. HM-Sr. Trevor Rasmussen, OR - 2x State Champ, Reno TOC Runner-Up
5. HM-Jr. Jake Robb, Kittaning, PA - State Runner-Up, State 5th, NHSCA 4th
6. Jr. Andrew Gunning, Liberty, PA - State 5th
7. Fr. Cole Nye, Wyoming Seminary, PA - Prep 6th, Ironman 7th, Eastern States 3rd
8. Sr. James Ford, Worthington, OH - State 3rd, Top Gun Runner-Up, Fargo AA
9. So. Cole Rickert, Reynolds, PA - State 7th
10. 8th Grade - Cohlton Schultz, CO - #1 Junior High Wrestler

Notes: Myers is about as good as anyone in the country. He’s coming off a super busy stretch where he won his 4th state title, wrestled the Dapper Dan, won SR Nationals, and drove up to Flo.
Luke Ready is a guy I want to get a look at. I’ve heard good things.
But the story could be 8th grader Cohlton Shultz. The kid already beats state champions on a regular basis.

Notes: The big man, Kevin Vough, made waves last year by winning FloNats as a Frosh. And his productivity kept up through the summer and into this season when he won Ironman and a state title.
There’s news that Dan Perry is the truth, and I’m happy to get a look at him. That being said, he had a close one with Wahab in state finals, 3-2.
Those two, along with Beistel and Jiovenetta, will be good JR’s to evaluated heading into the next recruiting cycle.
