Tyrell Gold Among a Sea of Silvers
Tyrell Gold Among a Sea of Silvers
Silver linings. All four members of the American contingent that were in action on Wednesday at University Worlds reached the finals. And the first three were oh-so-close to capturing the title. It wasn't until our final entry, Tyrell Fortune at 125KG, gut wrenched his way like child's play, to a tech, the American grabbed a Gold on Wednesday.
BJ Futrell (61KG) was in a wild affair in his finals vs. Mongolia after a high octane first period. But questionable scoring on the edge was the difference. With his opponent facing his third caution, Futrell was initially awarded a 2pt. takedown that gave him the lead. But Mongolia challenged it it was reversed to a push-out that sealed his fate with just two seconds remaining.
With a lead late in the second period, James Green (70KG) gave up a takedown to trail his Moldovan opponent 4-4. He was pinned in the waning moments of the bout.
And the trend continued at 86KG where Chris Perry led 3-1 when he gave up a takedown with :25 remaining.
At the conclusion of men's freestyle, the U.S. medal haul is 7 (out of 8 weights): 2 Gold, 4 Silvers, and a Bronze.
