It all started with a bang for Coach Charles: 2 National Champions, another All American and a top 10 finish.

That being said, Coach Charles has had a hard time sustaining success at Arizona State. With only 1 qualifier this year, disappointment has been the theme for the Sun Devils the last 3 seasons. That lone qualifier, Blake Stauffer needed a Wildcard berth to qualify.

Arizona State Athletic Director Ray Anderson released the following statement: “We thank Coach Charles for the contributions he has given to his alma mater during his tenure,” Anderson said. “We will launch a national search immediately for his successor. Our wrestling program has enjoyed success as one of the premier programs in the country and we are intent on regaining that status going forward.”

So ASU is going in a different direction. A school with its tradition and resources should have a wide variety of qualified applicants. Arizona State can be a winner, and should expect just that. WVU took a similar step with not renewing longtime Coach Greg Turnbull. With a host of qualified Coaches out there, it is not unreasonable to expect rapid turnarounds for these sleeping giants.

Two big time programs have made changes already this off-season. Will we see more?
