The Book on Diehl
Ryan Diehl came out of the class of 2013 as one of the premier high school light weight prospects in the country. He won four state titles (two in West Virginia and two in Pennsylvania) and notched wins during his high school career over numerous high school legends, like George Dicamillo (OH) and Jason Nolf (PA); he would go on to represent Team PA in the 2013 Dapper Dan Classic. Post his illustrious high school career, Diehl commited to wrestle for the University of Maryland. He would later transfer to Liberty University, where he is now sitting at 32-0 and on his way to making the NCWA finals this weekend.
Stylistically: Diehl is very solid on his feet. He possesses a fantastic duck under and some of the best leg attack counters you'll see this week; he's also solid upper body and knows how to throw. On the mat, he's absolutely smothering.
Signature Match: Ryan Diehl vs. #1 George Dicamillo in Super 32 Finals
The Book on Shames
Sam Shames hails from M.I.T. and is clearly a genius of sorts. The undergraduate senior is already published in multiple science & research journals and has gained acclaim for his invention of a thermoelectric bracelet that helps individuals maintain comfortable body temperature. He's pretty damn tough on the mat too. Like Diehl, he boasts a solid high school wrestling resume: he was a New England champion and two time All-State Champion; he capped his high school career by becoming a NHSCA All-American. Shames entered his senior year in college as the defending NCWA National Champion and is three time NCWA All-American. He's 37-0 on the season and has not been tested.
Stylistically: Shames likes to attack legs early, but it is his ability to scramble when opponents get to his legs that win him big matches. If back points are ever in sight, he makes sure to capitalize.
Signature Match: Sam Shames vs. Brenden Campbell in 2013 NCWA Finals
Summary
Diehl really made a name for himself while in high school. Now he's trying to make a big impact in college by capping his freshman season undefeated and with a national title. Shames has been at the top before and would like nothing more than to conclude his senior season with another NCWA title -before going on to change the world.
