CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Danny Sabatello and Patrick Kissel posted top-20 upsets for the 24th-ranked Purdue wrestling team, but the Boilermakers were only able to win at two other weights as they fell to No. 5 Northern Iowa in West Gymnasium Sunday, 21-12. They wrapped up the dual season with a record of 6-8, 1-7 Big Ten. The win for UNI keeps its perfect season intact at 11-0, 5-0 MAC.

In a wild, high scoring match, Sabatello upset 14th-ranked Joey Lazor, 14-10. The 141-pounders put on an offensive show from the first whistle. Sabatello jumped out to a 4-1 lead with a pair of takedowns. They exchanged reversals and Lazor escaped, only to be taken back down to close out the first period with the Boilermaker holding an 8-4 lead.

Lazor escaped after starting the second stanza from bottom, to which Sabatello took him right back down to the mat. The Long Grove, Ill., native added another takedown, only to be reversed once again. With a 12-8 advantage, Sabatello opted to start the final two minutes from neutral. Lazor scored his only takedown in the match in the third, but Sabatello secured the win with a late reversal.

It was the second time in as many matches that the unranked redshirt sophomore has upended a top-20 opponent. He also became the second Boilermaker to amass 20 wins this season at 20-9.

At 174 pounds, Kissel picked up his 12th win by recording a 4-2 decision over No. 17 Cody Caldwell. Neither wrestler was able to find a successful shot for a scoreless opening three minutes of action. The redshirt junior grappler for Purdue deferred in the second, to which Caldwell chose bottom. Kissel rode the Panther tough for nearly the entire period, until a late stalling warning lead to an escape by Caldwell for a 1-0 lead.

Starting the final period from bottom, Kissel quickly escaped and attacked for the takedown. He continued to rack up riding time, accumulating 3:02 worth, before Caldwell managed to free himself to close out the bout. The win marked the first for Kissel, who is now 12-11, over a ranked opponent in his career.

Alex Griffin and Braden Atwood were also victorious for the Boilermakers at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Griffin escaped after a Jarrett Jensen reversal to start the second period and it was his reversal midway through the third period that earned him a 3-2 decision. The redshirt freshman hailing from Lafayette, Ind., improved his record to 17-9.

The 12th-ranked Atwood recovered from a quick takedown by Jared Bartel with a strong second period en route to a 7-5 decision. Trailing 2-1 after the first period, Atwood got Bartel tilted while on top for a two-point nearfall. Then in almost one motion out of the nearfall, Bartel reversed the Boilermaker to take a 4-3 lead. Atwood scored a takedown late in the period and added an escape to push his record to 23-7.

In a highly anticipated matchup at 133 pounds, UNI’s top-ranked Joe Colon edged No. 12 Cashé Quiroga with an 8-6 decision. Quiroga wasted no time getting ahead on his opponent, striking for a takedown just seconds into the bout. Colon responded with a reversal and Quiroga escaped, taking a 3-2 advantage into the second period.

The Boilermaker’s lead evaporated in the second as Colon escaped early and added a takedown on the edge late in the period that was reviewed and confirmed. Another takedown by Colon on the edge to start the third period was challenged by Purdue, but was upheld, giving the Panther a 7-3 lead. Quiroga escaped and got another takedown, but time expired before he was able to get another shot after a Colon escape. The loss puts the redshirt senior’s record at 13-5.

Purdue embarks upon the start of the postseason at the Big Ten Championships March 8-9 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.
