Chalfant, LeBlanc Go Out With Wins On Senior Day
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Fifth-year seniors Adam Chalfant and Ryan LeBlanc went out with individual victories on their last day competing in University Gym as #19 Indiana fell to Michigan State, 18-16, on Senior Day. Redshirt junior Taylor Walshand redshirt freshman Trevor Moody notched bout wins as well versus the Spartans.
The dual started with Moody's 4-2 decision over Brian Gibbs at 141 pounds. Gibbs came out on the right end of an elongated scramble for a first-period takedown. He then elected to start the second period in the bottom position where Moody locked on for a full two-minute ride. It's was Moody's turn to hit the deck to begin the third frame, escaping in short time cutting his deficit in half. Moody then grabbed the lead with a late takedown. Add on the riding time point, and Moody's 4-2 tally gave him his second consecutive Big Ten triumph.
Walsh overcame an early 2-0 hole as well, giving up a takedown to Roger Wildmo in the 157-pound bout. Walsh's response was fierce, following an escape with a cradle to stick Wildmo at the 1:40 mark. Walsh moved closer to becoming IU's all-time pins leader with his 45th career fall. The record currently sits at 47 pins by Viktor Sveda (1998-2002). It also marks his school-record 24th fall of the season (previous high was 19 by Rod Chamberlin in 1981).
LeBlanc kept it going in the subsequent bout, posting six takedowns and three near-fall points en route to a 16-5 major decision over Bobby Nash. LeBlanc now owns a Big Ten-best 11 majors on the season, good for a top-5 ranking nationally.
The marquee match-up came at heavyweight when #4 Chalfant (22-2) squared off with #6 Mike McClure (21-5). The two big fellas met once earlier this season as Chalfant earned a 5-3 decision in the Michigan State Open finals. This time it ended with Chalfant on
top, 5-1. He got behind McClure, lifted and slammed him to the mat for his first takedown. Chalfant has entered the circle against a top-10 opponent eight times this season, arising as the victor on seven occasions. He also completed an undefeated record at
home for his senior campaign.
