Clarion Tops CSU 30-16 on Senior Day

SENIORS BEDELYON & CONTRERAS SCORE FALLS

CLARION WRESTLERS TOPPLE CLEVELAND STATE 30-16

(CLARION, PA.):  What a Senior Day!

Senior wrestlers Tyler Bedelyon (Lewistown) at 141 and Brandon Contreras (Rochester, N.Y.) at 197 both scored falls and led the Golden Eagles to a 30-16 win over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon in an NCAA Division I and EWL wrestling match.

Held at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, the Senior Day crowd of 450 saw Clarion raise its overall record to 9-12 and 3-3 in the EWL. Cleveland State dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the EWL.

Clarion jumped out to a 10-0 early lead when Hunter Jones (Fr. New Rochelle, N.Y.) posted a 13-3 major decision over John Martin at 125 and Sam Sherlock received a forfeit win at 133.

Senior captain Tyler Bedelyon, introduced with fellow seniors Contreras and Nick Milano (Erie/Cathedral Prep) in pre-match ceremonies, brought the house down with his pin in the first period over Jared McKinney at 2:27. Trailing 2-0, Bedelyon reversed McKinney to his back and then pancaked his opponent with the crowd on its feet – giving Clarion a 16-0 lead.

Freshman Justin Arthur (Huntington, W.V.) posted a 16-0 technical fall at 2:49 over Nick Montgomery at 149, then freshman Austin Matthews (Greenville/Reynolds) scored a 14-5 major decision over R.J. Labeef to put Clarion ahead 25-0 at the midpoint of today’s dual. Arthur is now 24-8 and Matthews 19-5.

Cleveland State rallied for three wins including Matt Donohoe’s 11-6 decision over Michael Pavasko at 165, Nick Corba’s pin at 3:00 over Ryan Darch at 174 and Xavier Dye’s 11-6 decision over Dustin Conti at 184, narrowing Clarion’s lead to 25-12.

Brandon Contreras then stepped up at 197 and brought the crowd to its feet again when he used a half nelson to turn Corbin Boone to his back and pin the Viking at 1:46.

Evan Daley lost a major decision – 13-5 – to Riley Shaw at heavyweight. A team point deduction against Clarion following heavyweight made the final score Clarion 30 Cleveland State 16.

“What a great way for our seniors to go out on Senior Day,” said Clarion second year head coach Troy Letters. “We really had some excitement in the gym today. Can’t wait until Oklahoma State visits next Saturday.”
