CLARION WRESTLERS DEFEAT LOCK HAVEN 18-12
(CLARION, PA.): Clarion won six of ten bouts, and heavyweight
Evan Daley (Erie/Fort LeBoeuf) sealed a Golden Eagle with a key victory on Friday night as the Golden Eagles defeated Lock Haven 18-12 in NCAA Division I Wrestling.
Held at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, Clarion raised its overall record to 7-10 and 1-2 in the EWL, while Lock Haven dropped to 2-9
overall and 0-4 in the EWL.
With Clarion leading 15-12 going to heavyweight, the Golden Eagles needed a win by
Evan Daley to secure victory. Daley came through. The Golden Eagle freshman scored a first period takedown to lead 2-1 after the first, then escaped and scored a big duck under takedown in the second to post a 5-1 lead after two periods. Daley rode Cody
Mason the entire third period for a 6-1 in and a Clarion victory.
“We really wrestled well as a team tonight,” said Clarion second year head coach Troy Letters. “The six wins were important, but
even in our losses we were very competitive and wrestled smart.”
Clarion won four of the first five bouts to lead 12-3. At 125 freshman
Hunter Jones (New Rochelle, N.Y.) decisioned Kaleb LeMaire 8-2, and at 133
Sam Sherlock (Jr. West Mifflin) notched a 3-2 win over Cody Wheeler to put Clarion in front 6-0.
After
Tyler Bedelyon (Sr. Lewistown) lost a 5-1 decision to Dan Neff at 141, Clarion’s duo of
Justin Arthur (Fr. Huntington, W.V.) and Austin Matthews (Fr. Greenville/Reynolds) at 149 and 157 came through with big wins.
Arthur defeated Mac Maldarelli 7-4 at 149. Tied 4-4 in the third, Arthur escaped and scored a takedown for the win. Matthews meanwhile won 5-2 over Billy Randt at 157 with a first period takedown and a reversal
in the second.
LH’s Jake Kemerer decisioned Michael Pavasko (Fr. Munhall/Steel Valley) 14-7 at 165 – but Pavasko’s reversal with six seconds left in the bout saved Clarion a big team point.
Maybe the biggest match of the night came at 174, where
Ryan Darch (Jr. Batavia, N.Y.) won a key 3-0 decision over Dylan Caprio. Darch scored a two-point near fall in the second using a half-nelson. His third period escape proved to be the final points in the 3-0 win – giving Clarion a 15-6 lead.
Clarion’s Dustin Conti (Fr. Jefferson/Jefferson-Morgan) lost a 10-3 decision to Fred Garcia at 184, with a late escape by Conti again saving a team point, and
Daniel Sutherland (Jr. North Bellmore, N.Y.) lost a 9-4 decision to Phil Sprenkle at 197 pulling Lock Haven to within 15-12, and setting up Daley’s winning bout.
Clarion returns to Tippin Gym on Saturday to wrestle EWL newcomer George Mason at 2pm, then travels to Bloomsburg for a 2pm match on Super Bowl Sunday.
