Cal Poly Falls to Northern Colorado in Non-Conference Dual Meet
-- Cal Poly Wrestling --

GREELEY, Colo. -- Despite a fall and pair of major decisions, the Cal Poly wrestling team dropped a narrow 19-17 decision to Northern Colorado in a non-conference dual meet Sunday afternoon in Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.

Northern Colorado 125-pounder Trey Andrews won the final bout, a 6-2 decision over Mustang senior Britain Longmire.

After a scoreless first period, Andrews earned an escape in the second period for a 1-0 lead. Andrews scored a two-point near fall 13 seconds into the last period and, after a Longmire reversal, tallied an escape for a 4-2 lead. A takedown by Andrews with 23 seconds left sealed the victory for him as well as the dual meet win for the Bears.

Northern Colorado improved to 4-7 with the win while Cal Poly fell to 3-5.

Mustang 133-pounder Devon Lotito, wrestling in the first bout of the dual meet, scored his third consecutive win by fall, pinning Sonny Espinoza in 1 minute, 4 seconds. Lotito, now 17-7 for the year, scored a takedown 46 seconds into the match and pinned Espinoza 18 seconds later.

Kyle Chené and Dominic Kastl both won by major decision to give Cal Poly a 14-10 lead with four bouts to go, but Northern Colorado won three of them to capture the dual meet victory.

Chené earned a 15-6 major decision over Beau Roberts at 149 pounds, scoring a takedown and reversal in the first period, a reversal, three-point near fall and escape in the second period and a pair of takedowns plus riding time in the final period.

Chené is now 9-8 for the season.

Kastl, the Pac-12 champion at 165 pounds two years ago, improved to 14-3 with a 15-5 major decision over Josh Van Tine at 174 pounds.

A pair of takedowns in the first period and a two-point near fall and takedown in the second period gave Kastl an 8-2 lead and he pulled away in the final period with  an escape, takedown, three-point near fall and riding time.

Cal Poly's other win came from 197-pound freshman Nicolas Johnson as he edged Cole Briegel 6-4 with a takedown 28 seconds into the sudden victory period.

Earning his fourth win in 15 matches, Johnson trailed 3-0 after two periods before scoring a reversal and two-point near fall for a 4-3 lead. He was penalized for stalling with six seconds left, tying the match at 4-4 and forcing overtime.

Cal Poly led 17-13 after Johnson's win, but Northern Colorado won the final two bouts by decision. Mustang 285-pounder Spencer Empey dropped an 8-4 decision to Henry Chirino, setting the stage for Andrews' dual meet-clinching win at 125.

Northern Colorado won six of the 10 bouts -- five decisions and one major decision.

Cal Poly will host its first-ever outdoors match Thursday afternoon, hosting Oregon State at 3 p.m. for a Pac-12 Conference dual meet in the plaza of the University Union. Admission is free.
