UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Cashé Quiroga upset No. 13/9 Jimmy Gulibon at 133 pounds as No. 20 Purdue fell to top-ranked Penn State Sunday in Rec Hall. The Indianapolis, Ind., native scored a pair of takedowns, a three-point nearfall and escaped twice en route to a 9-2 decision to push his record to 8-3. The three-time defending national champion Nittany Lions won nine of 10 bouts, five of which resulted in bonus points, as they improved to 8-0, 2-0 Big Ten, while the Boilermakers slipped to 3-4, 0-4 Big Ten.

"It was a big win for him [Cashe]," head wrestling coach Scott Hinkel said. "That kid [Gulibon] is coming off really good tournament at the Southern Scuffle. Wins like that are confidence boosters, it was a big win. He's starting to get back into the thick of things with two wins over ranked kids this weekend [No. 15/20 Rossi Bruno of Michigan]. Hopefully it will propel him into the national rankings. He put in a good effort today."

Midway through the first period, Quiroga took Gulibon down and started looking for backpoints. With a five count, the redshirt senior was awarded the three-point nearfall and took a 5-0 lead into the second period.

Gulibon deferred to start the second, with Quiroga opting to start from bottom, where a minute later he escaped and immediately took the Nittany Lion down for an 8-0 advantage.

Gulibon started the final stanza from neutral looking to avoid a major decision. At the 1:01 mark, Gulibon scored a takedown to which Quiroga escaped from 16 seconds later, making the score 9-2, which was also the final.

With his two takedowns against Gulibon, Quiroga surpassed Logan Brown (2008-11) on Purdue's career takedown list and moved into sixth with 336 and now has 47 to his credit in his final campaign as a Boilermaker.

Purdue had the opportunity to win at 149 and 197, but suffered narrow decision losses. At 149, Brandon Nelsen dropped a 7-6 match to No. 15/7 Andrew Alton. Alton built a 6-3 lead through the first two periods, but was called for stalling three times in the final period, awarding Nelsen with three points. The Boilermaker (10-9) was unable to get a match-winning takedown as Alton won on 1:27 riding time.

Trailing 6-3 heading into the final two minutes, No. 13/16 Braden Atwood (17-6) was on top and attempted to get eighth-ranked Morgan MacIntosh tilted. He nearly had the Nitanny Lion where he wanted him, but a stalemate was called. Atwood racked up 1:02 worth of riding time in the final period, but was unable to get the backpoints needed to win, dropping a 6-4 decision.

"I saw a lot of good things from our guys today," Hinkel said. "It appeared that we were in better shape than them in a lot of matches, we just didn't finish the matches off. For us it's correcting mental mistakes and believing that you can win and you can score. I told the guys we just went through toughest grind of the season with Minnesota, Midlands, Iowa and Penn State. It's not going to get easier though. We need to use it as a confidence booster, stay excited and have a good next two months of wrestling."

A trip to Ashland, Ohio, for the Wendy's Duals is on deck for Purdue. The Boilermakers will first battle with the host, Ashland (NCAA Division II), followed by a dual against Northern Illinois on Jan. 19.
