UW wins 30 matches for the day

 

OREM, Utah (Jan. 11, 2014) Seven University of Wyoming wrestling competitors placed in the Utah Valley Open on Saturday in Orem, Utah, and UW brought home four weight-class titles.

 

Redshirt freshmen Jake Elliott, Brent Havlik and Brandon Tribble came away with first-place finishes, along with true freshman Zach Beard. The Cowboys won 30 matches among 10 wrestlers with just nine losses.

 

Elliott went 4-0 en route to the 149-pound title, winning his first tournament of the season. He tallied two major decisions and won 11-6 over Grand Canyon’s Mike Hamel in the final.

 

Beard was 4-0 at 165, and has won four of the six open tournaments in which he has wrestled. He also racked up his team-leading 12th pin of the season.

 

Havlik was unbeaten (4-0) at 174 and beat UW sophomore Jace Jensen in the final with a 3-1 win in overtime.

 

Tribble had three wins for the 197-pound crown, and placed for the third-straight tournament.

 

Other placers included redshirt freshman Cole Ford (third at 141) and freshman Archie Colgan, who was third at 157.
